Mazda MX-5 (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Irresistibly fun to drive | A bit cramped for tall drivers |
| Extremely reliable | Early cars have less safety kit than later models |
| Affordable to buy and run for a sports car | The boot is small |
Quick Summary
The Mazda MX-5 (2015-present), known as the mk4, is the world's best-selling roadster and represents the pinnacle of affordable sports car enjoyment. Remarkably, it weighs roughly the same as the original 1996 model whilst meeting modern safety standards. The two-seater cabin is stylish and well-made, though tight on space, particularly for those over six feet tall. The 130-litre boot is small, but the MX-5 mk4 prioritises driving experience over practicality, delivering spirited performance with modest 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre engines producing 129bhp to 181bhp respectively.
The MX-5 mk4 excels in delivering point-to-point speed, entertaining handling at all velocities, and accessibility for drivers of varying skill levels. Its light weight enables exceptional fuel economy exceeding 40mpg even when driven enthusiastically, whilst running costs remain impressively low for a sports car. Annual road tax ranges from £150 to £205, insurance groups span 25 to 32, and servicing costs are reasonable. The soft-top roof is easy to operate, and the 2019 onwards models feature adjustable steering wheel reach. This is a sports car that delivers maximum thrills with minimal horsepower, making it rewarding for everyday driving.
Best for: Drivers seeking affordable sports car thrills, those wanting reliable daily-use entertainment, and enthusiasts who value handling and engagement over raw power.
Not ideal for: Tall drivers requiring spacious cabins, buyers needing practical boot space, or those prioritising early model safety equipment.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.2% | 4.3/5 |

| MINI Convertible | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Mazda MX-5 Mk3 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.2% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MX-5 if: You're seeking affordable sports car thrills, want reliable daily-use entertainment, or value handling and engagement over raw power.
Consider alternatives if: You require a spacious cabin for taller drivers, need practical boot space, or prioritise early model safety equipment.
Competitive Position: The Mazda MX-5 (2015-present) stands as the superior choice amongst affordable convertible sports cars. Whilst the Fiat 500 Convertible offers better value deals and the MINI Convertible provides a higher overall rating, the MX-5 mk4 excels in expert assessment and user satisfaction. Its exceptional reliability, engaging driving dynamics, and low running costs make it the most rewarding choice for enthusiasts. The older MX-5 Mk3 remains equally well-regarded, but the mk4's improved safety equipment and modern refinements justify the investment for those seeking contemporary sports car enjoyment.

What people say
Very good value for money, a fun car to drive
The car was in excellent condition and priced far below other cars that I had viewed, The car drives nice and everything works.
A driver's car with excellent all round handling. It doesn't have much storage space but that is not what it's designed for - and I knew that when I bought it. Luckily my wife has a Defender 90.
Fun days out in a car that was initially stripped back to the essentials. Later models come with some toys but it retains the ability to make you smile.
Just scrapped a 1996 MGF. This 2006 MX5 is infinitely a better sports car in every way. Good value too.
