Mazda Mazda6 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enjoyable to drive | Not as roomy as the likes of the Skoda Superb |
| One of the most reliable big family cars | Petrol engines need a lot of revs |
| Lots of standard equipment | No plug-in hybrid |
Quick Summary
The third-generation Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a spacious and engaging family saloon or estate, notable for using Mazda's own platform and engines, a departure from its Ford Mondeo-based predecessors. It offers a more fun-to-drive experience, borrowing characteristics from the MX-5, making it stand out in its segment. Despite its quality, Mazda ceased its sale in the UK in January 2023 due to declining popularity of saloon cars, making it an excellent used buy due to steep depreciation.
Both saloon and Tourer versions offer good space for four adults, though rivals like the Skoda Superb provide more rear legroom. The saloon's 480-litre boot is practical, while the Tourer's 522-litre capacity (with easily folding rear seats) is better for bulkier items. Engine options include a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre turbodiesel, with the 148bhp diesel being a ULEZ-exempt, efficient choice. Equipment levels are generous, with later models (2016 onwards) benefiting from an improved touchscreen infotainment system. Real-world running costs are reasonable, with diesels achieving around 50mpg and petrols 40mpg, and significant depreciation makes it a compelling used bargain.
Best for: Drivers who enjoy an engaging driving experience, those seeking a reliable and well-equipped family car, buyers looking for a great used car bargain due to depreciation, and those needing a ULEZ-compliant diesel.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum rear legroom or the largest boot capacity (e.g., Skoda Superb), those who prefer a wider range of engine options (including hybrids or smaller turbocharged units), or those who dislike the need to rev petrol engines high.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda Mazda6 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 31.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Volkswagen Passat | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Superb | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Ford Mondeo | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.7% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda6 if: You enjoy an engaging driving experience, seek a reliable and well-equipped family car, are looking for a great used car bargain, or need a ULEZ-compliant diesel.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear legroom or the largest boot capacity (like the Skoda Superb), prefer a wider range of engine options (including hybrids or smaller turbocharged units), or dislike the need to rev petrol engines high.
Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a highly competitive option in the used large family car market, offering an enjoyable driving experience, strong reliability, and generous standard equipment. While newer rivals like the Skoda Superb might offer more interior space or a broader engine choice, the Mazda6's significant depreciation makes it an outstanding used bargain. Its distinct character and driving dynamics set it apart, appealing to those who want more than just practicality from their family saloon or estate.
Mazda Mazda6 Review

4.4 Overall rating
(14 reviews)Executive car. People turn too look at it, especially in white. Gorgeous rims. I love this car. Runs great, easy to have a good mpg average but at the same time it flies when you press the pedal.
Smashing car , good drive and great fuel consumption
Amazing car, plain petrol ,plenty of power and the colour is amazing Soul red
I have test driven a diesel model which I find a little sluggish! It was a 2L engine. I may go for the petrol engine next time. Maybe a 2.5L diesel might be a bit more responsive but I would go for a petrol engine (2Litre)
Its a lovely car, but the paintwork is badly chipped. It turns out that there is a problem with this actual colour. It was applied too thinly. Also, budget tyres on all four corners...one with an obvious slow puncture. Chips to the windscreen.
