Mazda6 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enjoyable to drive | Not as roomy as the Skoda Superb |
| One of the most reliable big family cars | Petrol engines need a lot of revs |
| Lots of standard equipment | No plug-in hybrid |
Quick Summary
The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a seriously good family car that combines spaciousness, affordability, and excellent equipment with engaging driving dynamics. This third generation uses Mazda's own platform and engines, departing from earlier Ford Mondeo-based generations, and borrows characteristics from the MX-5 sports car to deliver a more enjoyable driving experience than typical saloons or estates. Both the saloon and Tourer (estate) comfortably accommodate four tall adults, though the saloon's 480-litre boot is narrower than rivals, whilst the Tourer's 522-litre boot is far more practical with flat-folding rear seats.
The Mazda6 launched with 2.0-litre petrol (143bhp or 163bhp) or 2.2-litre turbodiesel (148bhp or 173bhp) engines, with the lower-powered diesel offering excellent efficiency and ULEZ exemption. Real-world economy reaches around 50mpg from manual diesel models and 40mpg from the 2.0-litre petrol. Equipment is generous across the range, with even entry-level SE-L trim featuring Bluetooth, USB charging, alloy wheels, parking sensors, and cruise control. From 2016 onwards, a seven-inch touchscreen became standard with improved functionality, upgraded to eight inches from 2019. The Mazda6 depreciates significantly compared to SUV alternatives, making it an exceptional used car bargain with proven reliability and low running costs.
Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, reliable family car with excellent value, those prioritising driving enjoyment over maximum space, and buyers wanting generous standard equipment at affordable used prices.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum interior space (Skoda Superb offers more), buyers wanting plug-in hybrid options, or those preferring lower-revving petrol engines.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda6 if: You're seeking an engaging, reliable family car with excellent value, prioritise driving enjoyment over maximum space, or want generous standard equipment at affordable used prices.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, want plug-in hybrid options, or prefer lower-revving petrol engines.
Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a compelling choice in the used executive family car market, offering exceptional value and engaging driving dynamics. Whilst the Skoda Superb provides more space and the Volkswagen Passat offers broader engine options, the Mazda6's significant depreciation makes it an outstanding used car bargain. Its proven reliability, generous standard equipment, and enjoyable driving characteristics make it a highly sensible choice for buyers wanting a well-rounded family car without premium pricing. The Tourer estate variant is particularly practical for those needing extra boot space.

4.5 Overall rating
(6 reviews)The vehicle is driving very well. Its condition is great given the manufacturing year. Interior electronic functioning well.
Executive car. People turn too look at it, especially in white. Gorgeous rims. I love this car. Runs great, easy to have a good mpg average but at the same time it flies when you press the pedal.
Smashing car , good drive and great fuel consumption
Amazing car, plain petrol ,plenty of power and the colour is amazing Soul red
I have test driven a diesel model which I find a little sluggish! It was a 2L engine. I may go for the petrol engine next time. Maybe a 2.5L diesel might be a bit more responsive but I would go for a petrol engine (2Litre)
