Executive car. People turn too look at it, especially in white. Gorgeous rims. I love this car. Runs great, easy to have a good mpg average but at the same time it flies when you press the pedal.

Mazda6 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Enjoyable to drive | Not as roomy as the Skoda Superb |
| One of the most reliable big family cars | Petrol engines need a lot of revs |
| Lots of standard equipment | No plug-in hybrid |
Quick Summary
The Mazda6 (2013-2022), the third generation of this family saloon and estate, represents a significant departure from its predecessors by using Mazda's own platform and engines rather than Ford Mondeo underpinnings. It's a seriously good family car that's spacious, well-equipped, safe, and hardy, with the added bonus of being genuinely enjoyable to drive thanks to characteristics borrowed from the MX-5 sports car. Both the saloon and Tourer estate are comfortable for four tall adults, though the saloon's 480-litre boot is narrower than rivals, whilst the Tourer's 522-litre estate boot is far more practical.
The Mazda6 launched with a choice of 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines (143bhp or 163bhp) or 2.2-litre turbodiesel options (148bhp or 173bhp). The lower-powered diesel is particularly gutsy and efficient, achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 2.0-litre petrol manages approximately 40mpg. Equipment levels are generous across the range, with even entry-level trims featuring Bluetooth, USB charging, alloy wheels, parking sensors, and cruise control. The 2016 model onwards benefits from an improved seven-inch touchscreen with a rotary controller, whilst 2019 models received an eight-inch screen. In January 2023, Mazda discontinued the Mazda6 in the UK due to declining saloon car popularity, making used examples increasingly attractive bargains thanks to steep depreciation.
Best for: Drivers seeking an enjoyable, reliable, and well-equipped family car that's affordable as a used purchase, and those who value driving dynamics alongside practicality.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum interior space (like the Skoda Superb), those requiring plug-in hybrid options, or drivers wanting the broadest range of engine and transmission choices.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda6 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 35.9% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen Passat | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Skoda Superb | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 42.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Ford Mondeo Mk4 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda6 if: You're seeking an enjoyable, reliable, and well-equipped family car that's affordable as a used purchase, and you value driving dynamics alongside practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, require plug-in hybrid options, or want the broadest range of engine and transmission choices.
Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a strong contender in the used family car market, offering excellent value thanks to steep depreciation. Whilst it may not match the Skoda Superb for sheer interior space or offer the broader engine range of the Volkswagen Passat, its combination of driving enjoyment, reliability, generous equipment levels, and affordability make it a highly sensible choice for used car buyers. The discontinuation of the model in the UK market further enhances its appeal as a bargain purchase, with many examples offering fantastic value for money compared to fresher rivals.
