Mazda6 (2007-2012) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Much more sporty to drive than most family cars	Firm ride
Large boot, whether you choose the hatch or the estate	The 2.5-litre petrol is thirsty
Wide choice of petrol and diesel engines	Too many hard and cheap-looking plastics in the cabin

Quick Summary

The Mazda6 (2007-2012), the second-generation model, is a mid-size family car that combines engaging driving dynamics with practical space and comfort. Available as a saloon, hatchback, or estate, it was designed for company car drivers and families alike. The hatchback is the most common on the used market, offering impressive boot space nearly matching the estate. A facelift in 2010 improved the range, though the saloon was discontinued that year. The firm suspension delivers composure and agility through corners with communicative steering, rewarding drivers who venture beyond motorways whilst remaining comfortable for long-distance cruising.

The engine lineup includes petrol options (1.8, 2.0, and 2.5-litre) and diesel variants, with the 2.2-litre diesel being the standout choice, particularly in higher power outputs of 161 or 177bhp. Fuel economy ranges from 34mpg for the 2.5-litre petrol to 51mpg for the efficient 2.2-litre diesel. Trim levels span from the basic S through TS, TS2, Sport, and SL, with later models featuring Bluetooth and enhanced comfort features. Whilst the interior lacks the sophistication of some rivals, the Mazda6 offers excellent value as a used car with plenty of good examples available at attractive prices.

Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, sporty driving experience without sacrificing comfort, families needing practical space, and buyers looking for excellent value in the mid-size family car segment.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising a soft, cushioned ride, buyers wanting a premium cabin feel, or those considering the thirsty 2.5-litre petrol engine.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Mazda6 if: You seek an engaging, sporty driving experience without sacrificing comfort, need practical space for families, or want excellent value in the mid-size family car segment.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a soft, cushioned ride, want a premium cabin feel, or require maximum fuel efficiency over driving enjoyment.

Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2007-2012) is a compelling choice in the mid-size family car market, offering a unique blend of engaging driving dynamics and practical space. Whilst the Ford Mondeo Mk3 edges ahead with a higher expert rating and user satisfaction, the Mazda6 delivers superior driving engagement than most rivals and represents excellent value. The Volkswagen Passat B7 offers more premium appeal, but the Mazda6's sporty character and lower running costs make it an attractive alternative for drivers who prioritise driving enjoyment alongside practicality. With plenty of good examples available at attractive prices, it deserves serious consideration alongside its main rivals.
