Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Eye-catching looks, inside and out | Compromised rear headroom |
| Comfortable and confident drive | Premium price tag |
| The AMG version is hugely quick | Porsche Panamera is more exciting to drive |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz CLS (2018-present) is a stylish, sportier four-door coupe designed for those who desire the luxury of an E-Class or S-Class but with a more distinctive silhouette. Its sweeping roofline, while eye-catching, does compromise rear headroom for taller adults, and the traditional saloon-style boot, unlike rivals' hatchbacks, can make loading larger items less convenient. However, it offers ample legroom, general storage, and a large boot space.
It delivers a comfortable and confident driving experience, feeling solid with reassuring steering. Engine options include two diesels (CLS300d, CLS400d) and two petrols (CLS350, CLS450), with petrol models featuring a mild-hybrid EQ Boost system for improved economy. The high-performance AMG CLS53 offers 429bhp. The interior is well-crafted with a modern design, extensive mood lighting, comfortable seats, and a feature-rich infotainment system. While a premium car, it offers good value compared to competitors and is expected to retain high resale values.
Best for: Drivers prioritising style and luxury over absolute practicality, those seeking a comfortable and confident drive, buyers looking for a generously equipped premium car, or an affordable high-performance AMG model.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum rear headroom or a hatchback-style boot for easy loading, those on a tight budget, or those who prefer the absolute finest handling of a Porsche Panamera.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 27.8% | 4.1/5 |
| Porsche Panamera | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.3% | 4.2/5 |
| BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.3% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi A7 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.1% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the CLS if: You prioritise style and luxury over absolute practicality, seek a comfortable and confident drive, desire a generously equipped premium car, or are looking for an affordable high-performance AMG model.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum rear headroom or a hatchback-style boot for easy loading, are on a tight budget, or prefer the absolute finest handling of a Porsche Panamera.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz CLS (2018-present) stands out in the luxury car market for its exceptional style, comfort, and confident driving dynamics. While it makes some compromises in rear practicality compared to rivals like the Audi A7 or BMW 6 Series GT, its strong value retention, generous equipment levels, and the appeal of the AMG variant make it a highly attractive option for buyers seeking a distinctive and luxurious coupe. It offers a compelling blend that rivals struggle to match in overall sleekness and driving experience.

4.6 Overall rating
(15 reviews)Probably the best car I have ever owned and Ive had lots. Comfortable, economic great features, looks fabulous. I drove to France from Edinburgh and it never missed a beat, less than 3/4 of a tank of fuel to reach the south coast. I am just about to take delivery of a shooting brake version and Im really looking forward to it.
A very stable car that drives smoothly. Very luxurious.
Good value for money and one of the most comfortable ways to drive
Find a Grand Edition 272bhp. Elegance & Performance. But you only get 4 seats (and an enormous boot!).
Had Audi A5 also BMW 5 series the cls is a far superior car to both of these
