Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Eye-catching looks, inside and out | Compromised rear headroom |
| Comfortable and confident drive | Premium price tag |
| The AMG version is hugely quick | Porsche Panamera is more exciting to drive |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (2018-present) is a stylish four-door coupé that combines luxury with sporting appeal. This generation offers a beautifully appointed interior with mood lighting, highly adjustable front seats, and an intuitive infotainment system. The sweeping roofline compromises rear headroom for taller passengers, but legroom and storage remain generous. Engine options include the efficient CLS300d diesel, the more powerful CLS400d with 4Matic all-wheel drive, petrol variants with mild-hybrid EQ Boost technology, and the high-performance AMG CLS53 with 429 horsepower.
The CLS delivers a comfortable, confident drive with solid steering feel and impressive refinement. Fuel economy ranges from high-30s to low-40s mpg for diesels and high-20s to mid-30s for petrols, with the CLS53 achieving mid-20s in real-world conditions. Service intervals occur every 12 months or 10,000 miles, with Mercedes' transferable ServiceCare plan available from around £40 monthly. As a premium vehicle, running costs are higher, but strong resale values and generous standard equipment across both AMG Line and AMG Line Premium Plus trims make it compelling value in the luxury segment.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, luxurious saloon with confident handling, those prioritising interior design and comfort, and performance enthusiasts considering the AMG variant.
Not ideal for: Taller rear passengers requiring maximum headroom, budget-conscious buyers, or those seeking the most engaging driving dynamics in the segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 37.3% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche Panamera | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.1% | 4.2/5 |
| BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.1% | 4.1/5 |
| Audi A7 Sportback | 4/5 | 3.5/5 | 28.8% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the CLS if: You prioritise striking design and luxury, seek a comfortable and confident drive, or desire the performance of the AMG variant without sacrificing everyday usability.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear headroom, are budget-conscious, or prioritise the most engaging driving dynamics available in the segment.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (2018-present) stands as a compelling choice in the luxury four-door coupé market, offering superior styling and interior design compared to rivals. Whilst the Porsche Panamera delivers more thrilling performance and the Audi A7 Sportback provides a slightly more impressive cabin, the CLS balances these elements effectively. The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo offers practicality but lacks the CLS's sleekness. With strong resale values, generous equipment levels, and a range of efficient engines, the CLS represents excellent value for those seeking luxury, style, and everyday comfort in equal measure.

(8 reviews)Best looking 4 door car ever nicer than model after 2011 . Jaguar only rival and handles better but not as comfortable
Bought the car, 20 mins later problems started with engine lights coming on ABS/ SRS & EPS Its been over 2 weeks now, still trying to get the car fixed. Absolutely HORRIBLE experience..!! Regretting, why did i buy this car from here..!!
Probably the best car I have ever owned and Ive had lots. Comfortable, economic great features, looks fabulous. I drove to France from Edinburgh and it never missed a beat, less than 3/4 of a tank of fuel to reach the south coast. I am just about to take delivery of a shooting brake version and Im really looking forward to it.
A very stable car that drives smoothly. Very luxurious.
Good value for money and one of the most comfortable ways to drive
