Good small SUV, the 220d engine felt correct for the car. Interior fittings more SUV than limo., but liveable. Did not buy as rear seats are too hard for my intended use.

I only had a short test drive, but the car is very comfortable, spacious and ultra modern inside. It drives well and is quiet and refined. If your looking for a smallish 7 seater, it needs to be on your list.

Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressive practicality and space | Not especially engaging to drive |
| Seven seats when most rivals have five | Third-row seats are best suited to children |
| Excellent MBUX infotainment system | Versions on larger wheels have a firm ride |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (2019-2025) is a premium compact SUV that prioritises practicality over fashion. Based on the same platform as the A-Class and B-Class, it combines relatively compact dimensions with a surprisingly spacious cabin. Unlike many style-led rivals, the GLB features a tall, upright and deliberately boxy design that maximises interior space, visibility and usability. A standout feature is the option of seven seats – something still relatively unusual at this size and price point, with all later versions offering this as standard.
The GLB excels in family-focused areas, offering 570 litres of boot space in five-seat configuration, expanding to 1,805 litres with rear seats folded. The impressive MBUX infotainment system features dual 10.25-inch widescreen displays, whilst safety credentials and premium interior quality are strong throughout. Engine options include efficient diesels (GLB 200d and 220d) and a smoother petrol variant (GLB 200), all paired with automatic transmissions. The 4Matic four-wheel-drive system is available on diesel models, and a high-performance GLB 35 4Matic with over 300bhp was previously offered. Running costs are reasonable for a seven-seat premium SUV, with diesels achieving around 50mpg and petrol models around 40mpg.
Best for: Family buyers seeking seven-seat practicality, those prioritising space and visibility over driving dynamics, and buyers wanting premium quality with genuine versatility.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging, sporty drive, those wanting a sleek, fashion-led design, or buyers with limited budgets seeking mainstream alternatives.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 45.1% | 4.3/5 |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 41.2% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q3 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 38.6% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X1 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 39.5% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the GLB-Class if: You're a family buyer seeking seven-seat practicality, prioritising space and visibility over driving dynamics, or wanting premium quality with genuine versatility.
Consider alternatives if: You seek an engaging, sporty drive, prefer sleek, fashion-led design, or have limited budgets and need mainstream alternatives.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a compelling choice in the premium compact SUV segment, standing out through its focus on practicality rather than fashion. Whilst the Land Rover Discovery Sport edges ahead on user ratings and overall CarGurus rating, the GLB offers superior value with the highest percentage of good/great deals available. Unlike the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, which prioritise style and driving dynamics, the GLB delivers what family buyers genuinely need: abundant cabin space, excellent visibility and the unique advantage of seven seats. Its impressive MBUX infotainment system, strong safety credentials and premium interior quality make it a convincing family SUV choice, particularly for those valuing practicality and versatility over sportiness.
