Mercedes-Benz GLC (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
High-quality interior	Expensive, even by the standards of the class
Well equipped as standard	Adaptive cruise control costs extra
PHEV has huge electric-only range	PHEV versions have a small boot

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a consummate family SUV that combines refinement, comfort and class with impressive practicality. This mid-sized premium SUV sits between the smaller GLA and larger GLE, offering a spacious five-seat interior with a high-quality ambience throughout. The third-generation model sits on a heavily updated rear-wheel-drive platform that is longer and stiffer than its predecessor, improving interior space. Every version is electrified in some way, with 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, alongside plug-in hybrids offering up to 78 miles of WLTP-tested electric range thanks to a 25.3kWh battery. The range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance delivers 671bhp for those seeking performance.

The GLC excels in interior design and material finish, with tactile materials and contrasting finishes that rival even the premium standards set by Audi, BMW, Volvo and Lexus. Boot space in mild-hybrid models reaches 620 litres, making it one of the most spacious in its class, though plug-in hybrids sacrifice some capacity for their larger battery. The plug-in hybrids make a persuasive case as company cars thanks to lower Benefit-in-Kind tax rates based on their impressive electric range. For private buyers, the GLC remains highly desirable but list prices are on the high side, with key features pushing costs towards more expensive trim levels. The infotainment system is slick and intuitive, featuring an 11.9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard.

Best for: Company car drivers seeking low tax liabilities, families prioritising premium comfort and quality, and buyers wanting long-range plug-in hybrid technology with strong performance.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking the sharpest handling dynamics, or drivers wanting adaptive cruise control without paying extra.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the GLC if: You're a company car driver seeking low tax liabilities, a family prioritising premium comfort and quality, or looking for long-range plug-in hybrid technology with strong performance.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, seeking the sharpest handling dynamics, or require adaptive cruise control without paying extra.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of the most rounded premium SUVs available, offering refined comfort, class and impressive practicality. Whilst it commands higher list prices than rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, the GLC justifies this with strong standard equipment and a very upmarket interior. The plug-in hybrids make an especially compelling case for company car drivers, combining strong performance with very low tax liabilities and useful electric range. For private buyers, the GLC remains highly desirable, though rivals can offer similar space and performance for less money. If you can secure a competitive finance deal or find a nearly-new example at the right price, the GLC is an excellent choice.
