Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| High quality cabin | Expensive, even by the standards of the class |
| Well equipped as standard | Adaptive cruise control costs extra |
| PHEV has huge electric-only range | PHEV versions have a small boot |
Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (2023-present) is a premium mid-sized family SUV that impresses with its high-quality, tech-focused cabin and refined driving experience. Positioned between the smaller GLA and larger GLE, it competes with rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. This third-generation model features significant mechanical updates, including a longer platform for more interior space and a range of mild-hybrid (MHEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. Boot space is generous in MHEV models at over 600 litres, but this is reduced to 470 litres in the PHEV versions to accommodate the battery.
The standout feature is the PHEV's class-leading electric-only range of up to 80 miles, making it exceptionally compelling for company car drivers due to significant tax advantages. While comfortable and quiet, the GLC is less sporty to drive than some rivals. It is an expensive choice within its class, but this is partly justified by high standard equipment levels and strong predicted resale values. However, key features like adaptive cruise control are frustratingly reserved for costly option packs on top-spec trims, which detracts from the overall value proposition for private buyers.
Best for: Company car drivers seeking low tax bills, buyers prioritising a luxurious, tech-rich interior, and those wanting a PHEV with a class-leading electric range.
Not ideal for: Buyers on a strict budget, those who prioritise a sporty driving feel, or drivers needing maximum boot space in a plug-in hybrid model.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.5% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.9% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 32.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.0% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the GLC if: You are a company car driver seeking low tax bills, you want a premium cabin with cutting-edge tech, or you require a PHEV with a very long electric range.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a sporty and engaging driving experience, are working to a strict budget, or need the maximum possible boot space in a plug-in hybrid.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is a top-tier contender in the premium SUV market, setting a benchmark for interior quality, comfort, and plug-in hybrid technology. Its PHEV variant is arguably best-in-class for company car users. However, it commands a high price and offers a less dynamic drive than the BMW X3. For buyers who value luxury and low running costs over outright performance, the GLC is a deeply compelling and highly recommendable choice.

(11 reviews)Love this model! Better than the GLE. Quality interior compared to other equivalent manufacturers.
The model I chose being a GLC 250D Premium Plus AMG Line has a good luxury specification and performance. For an SUV this is a reasonably economical vehicle. 2016 makes it also car road tax efficient. Also the car insurance is not astronomical.
