Mercedes-Benz V-Class (2015-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Excellent space and practicality	Ludicrously expensive compared with rivals
Lots of standard equipment	Smartphone integration costs you extra
Poshest-feeling car in the class	Lofty running costs, too

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class (2015-present) is a luxury eight-seater MPV based on the Vito panel van, offering cavernous interior space with sophisticated cabin design. Available in Long and Extra Long variants, it features flexible seating configurations with removable seats, electric sliding doors, and an independent opening rear window. The cabin delivers genuine luxury with quality materials and finishes, whilst the high driving position and excellent visibility make manoeuvring surprisingly manageable despite its five-metre length.

Powered by 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engines (V220d with 163bhp or V300d with 233bhp), the V-Class delivers smooth, composed driving with impressive low-range torque and a responsive nine-speed automatic gearbox. The soft suspension absorbs bumps effectively whilst maintaining stability, making it ideal for VIP transport. However, it commands premium pricing from £70,000 upwards, with modest fuel economy of 36-37mpg and high insurance groupings. Only one AMG Line trim is available, though Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require additional payment.

Best for: Luxury-focused buyers seeking maximum space and comfort, VIP transport requirements, and those prioritising cabin sophistication and standard equipment over cost considerations.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking fuel efficiency, drivers wanting adaptive cruise control or advanced driver assistance systems, or anyone unwilling to pay premium pricing for a people carrier.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the V-Class if: You prioritise luxury and sophistication, require maximum space and comfort for VIP transport, and are willing to invest in premium pricing for a classiest-feeling people carrier.

Consider alternatives if: You seek better value for money, prioritise fuel efficiency, require advanced driver assistance systems, or want adaptive cruise control as standard.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz V-Class (2015-present) is the most luxurious option in the premium people carrier segment, delivering unmatched cabin sophistication and standard equipment. However, rivals like the Volkswagen Multivan and Toyota Proace Verso offer comparable practicality and space at significantly lower prices, with better value scores. The V-Class justifies its premium positioning through superior materials, refined driving dynamics, and VIP-focused design, making it the choice for those where only a Mercedes will do. The electric EQV variant provides an eco-conscious alternative within the same luxury ecosystem.
