Nissan Ariya (2022-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Practical interior	Ride comfort could be smoother
Attractive, modern cabin design	Boot is adequate but not exceptional
Relaxing to drive	Expensive to buy

Quick Summary

The Nissan Ariya is a five-seat electric SUV that sits between the Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail in size. It features a distinctive, upmarket design with an SUV-coupe silhouette and bold shark-like fascia. Available in two-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations, it offers two battery options: 63kWh or 87kWh, delivering an official WLTP-tested range of 247 to 330 miles. Prices start from £35,000 (or £33,500 with the UK Government's £1,500 electric car grant), rising to £56,630 for the performance-focused Nismo variant.

The Ariya is very practical, with a 466-litre boot in front-wheel-drive models and 408 litres in all-wheel-drive variants. The cabin is exceptionally well-designed with a minimalist, Scandi-inspired aesthetic featuring wood finishes and touch-sensitive controls. It's smooth and relaxing to drive, though its steering can feel light in brisk cornering, and the ride is rather firm. Running costs are competitive at around 7-8p per mile, with reasonable residual values. The Ariya represents a likeable family SUV with impressive interior quality, though it lacks a unique selling point in an increasingly competitive class.

Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, practical electric SUV with a premium interior, those prioritising comfort and relaxation over driving engagement, and families wanting generous equipment levels.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising ride comfort or engaging handling, those seeking the lowest purchase price in the class, or buyers wanting the most fun-to-drive electric SUV.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ariya if: You value stylish design and a premium interior, prioritise comfort and relaxation over driving engagement, or seek a practical family electric SUV with generous equipment.

Consider alternatives if: You want the smoothest ride, the most engaging driving experience, the lowest purchase price, or the highest expert ratings in the class.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Ariya is a bold and appealing electric SUV that competes well on interior design, practicality and perceived quality. However, it faces stiff competition from the Skoda Enyaq, which offers superior ride comfort and a lower price point, and the Tesla Model Y, which delivers more engaging driving dynamics. The Volkswagen ID.4 also provides strong value and user satisfaction. Whilst the Ariya's distinctive styling and premium cabin are genuine strengths, the lack of a unique selling point in an increasingly crowded market means it must work harder to justify its premium positioning against more accomplished rivals.
