The leaf is a great vehicle, well built, sturdy, quiet with all the requisite features you want or need in a car. The range is good, and best of all you can charge it at home

It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.

Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!

Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of space in the cabin | Not compatible with CCS charging |
| Affordable for a family EV | Driving position is short on adjustment |
| Extremely cheap to run | Many rivals will go further on a full charge |
Quick Summary
The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024), the second-generation model, represents a significant step forward in electric family hatchbacks. With sharp, modern styling that doesn't deliberately stand out, it offers a practical 435-litre boot and generous passenger space—more than a Ford Focus. The Leaf is available with either a 40kWh battery (168-mile range) or a larger 62kWh Leaf e+ model (239-mile range), though real-world figures are typically lower. Charging from a 7kW home wall box takes under seven hours for the standard model and 11 hours for the e+, whilst rapid charging via CHAdeMO delivers 100 miles in around 60 minutes.
Running costs are exceptionally low, with charging costing around 5p per mile on a standard domestic tariff. The Leaf benefits from zero VED road tax, free London Congestion and ULEZ entry, and affordable servicing at Nissan dealers. Every model includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear-view camera, and autonomous emergency braking. The innovative e-pedal setting allows one-pedal driving in urban environments, though some drivers may find the restrictive driving position and lack of CCS rapid charging compatibility frustrating compared to newer rivals.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable family electric car, those with access to home charging, and drivers prioritising low running costs and spacious interiors.
Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum driving range, drivers needing extensive steering wheel adjustment, or those wanting CCS rapid charging compatibility for long-distance travel.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Leaf | 3/5 | 3.8/5 | 32.7% | 4.1/5 |
| Kia e-Niro | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 24.8% | 4.4/5 |
| Renault Zoe | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.7% | 4.1/5 |
| Peugeot e-2008 | 4/5 | N/A | 41.9% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Leaf if: You're seeking an affordable family electric car with spacious interiors, have access to home charging, and prioritise low running costs over maximum driving range.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum driving range, need extensive steering wheel adjustment, or want CCS rapid charging compatibility for frequent long-distance travel.
Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) is a sensible, affordable option in the electric family hatchback class, offering excellent interior space, generous standard equipment, and exceptionally low running costs. However, newer competition has leapfrogged it in several areas. The Kia e-Niro delivers superior ratings and longer range, whilst the Peugeot e-2008 offers better CCS charging compatibility. The Leaf's lack of CCS rapid charging and limited range compared to near-300-mile alternatives are notable drawbacks. Nevertheless, its affordability, availability, and competitive finance offers make it an attractive choice for budget-conscious buyers who cannot access longer-range rivals.
