Renault Captur (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Practical cabin with its clever sliding rear bench Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma
Frugal hybrid model Elements of interior build quality could be better
Excellent Google-based touchscreen system Poor quality reversing camera

Quick Summary

The Renault Captur (2020-present) is a stylish and practical compact crossover that builds on the success of its predecessor. Based on the Clio hatchback, it offers more substantial styling, greater interior space, and an elevated driving position. The second-generation Captur features a neatly designed cabin with impressive practicality, including a clever sliding rear bench that allows you to trade rear legroom for extra boot space. Petrol models offer 444 litres of boot space, whilst the hybrid version provides 362 litres. The 2024 facelift introduced a redesigned front end and updated infotainment system.

Post-facelift versions come with a Google-backed 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is intuitive and user-friendly, featuring Google Maps, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Captur is available with a 1.0-litre TCe 90 petrol engine or Renault's E-Tech Hybrid powertrain, both delivering good fuel economy and low running costs. Older pre-facelift models offer additional engine options including a 1.3-litre TCe 130 petrol and 1.4-litre dCi diesel engines. The Captur rides comfortably, grips well, and is civilised on the motorway, though it lacks the driving engagement of a Ford Puma. Standard equipment is generous across the range, with even entry-level models featuring climate control and modern connectivity.

Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish and practical compact crossover, those interested in hybrid efficiency, families needing flexible interior space, and drivers who value modern infotainment systems.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising engaging driving dynamics, buyers concerned about interior material quality, or those requiring a large boot space in the hybrid version.

The Verdict

You should buy the Captur if: You seek a stylish and practical compact crossover, are interested in hybrid efficiency, need flexible interior space, or value modern infotainment systems.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, are concerned about interior material quality, or require a large boot space in the hybrid version.

Competitive Position: The Renault Captur (2020-present) is a strong contender in the compact crossover market, offering excellent practicality, stylish design, and a frugal hybrid option. Whilst the Ford Puma and Skoda Kamiq offer more engaging driving experiences and higher expert ratings, the Captur's clever sliding rear bench, Google-backed infotainment system, and generous standard equipment make it a compelling choice. It competes well on value and practicality, though buyers prioritising driving dynamics may prefer the Ford Puma. The Kia Stonic offers comparable value and user satisfaction, but the Captur's hybrid efficiency and modern tech give it an edge for those seeking a practical, stylish, and efficient compact crossover.

Customers say

The Renault Captur has generally won over drivers with its spaciousness, comfort, and impressive technology features. Many appreciate the comfortable driving experience and spacious boot space, which enhances its practicality. On the downside, some have pointed out the lack of certain features, such as an electronic parking brake, heated seats, and sufficient interior storage. Overall, the Captur serves as a good value option in the compact SUV segment, but drivers have shown a desire for more standout qualities and reliability in some earlier models.

The car was fine to drive. Adjustable steering wheel position and driver's seat height. Easy to start and drive off. Good visibility, though roof was a bit low when sitting in a high position. Engine was responsive and smooth, with seamless transition between electric battery and petrol engine. Plenty of leg room in the back and boot was spacious, with another storage space underneath. The side mirrors were rather small for a car of this size. Compares favourably with Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro and Toyota Yaris Cross. I might have bought this car had it not been for the pushy attitude of the salesman (Car Planet, Watford) and the derisory offer on the part exchange of our car. Also, the car was very dusty and had obviously not been washed ahead of our visit.
