Renault Megane (2016-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Impressively comfortable ride | Doesn't excel in any one area |
| Punchy, efficient engines | Questionable reliability record |
| Effective plug-in hybrid version | Infotainment awkward to use |
Quick Summary
The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a stylish French family hatchback that offers a comfortable ride and punchy, efficient engines. With its soft suspension, it glosses over lumpy road surfaces and provides a quiet, relaxed driving experience, making it an excellent motorway cruiser. The cabin features drab grey plastic but feels robust, with a crisp touchscreen infotainment display available in both Iconic and RS Line trim levels. An estate version provides additional practicality, whilst the Renaultsport (RS) variants deliver genuine hot hatch thrills, including the extreme Trophy-R with carbon fibre wheels and ceramic brakes.
Petrol versions achieve around 40-45mpg, whilst diesel models deliver approximately 55mpg. The plug-in hybrid E-Tech offers low CO2 emissions, making it attractive as a company car, though residual values are poor. Standard equipment is generous, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED headlights, cruise control, and dual-zone climate control on the Iconic trim. However, the Megane doesn't excel in any particular area, and Renault's reliability record is questionable. Better alternatives exist in the Ford Focus for driving dynamics, Skoda Octavia for space, and Seat Leon for overall value and modern appeal.
Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable, relaxed family hatchback with good equipment, particularly as a company car, and those interested in the engaging Renaultsport variants.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving dynamics, maximum interior space, excellent reliability, or strong residual values.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Megane | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.1% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Focus | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |
| Vauxhall Astra | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.9% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Megane if: You prioritise comfort and relaxation, seek good equipment at a reasonable price, or are interested in the engaging Renaultsport variants as an affordable hot hatch option.
Consider alternatives if: You value driving dynamics, maximum interior space, excellent reliability, or strong residual values and long-term cost-effectiveness.
Competitive Position: The Renault Megane (2016-2022) is a pleasant, comfortable family hatchback that offers good value and generous equipment. However, it doesn't excel in any particular area, making it less compelling than its rivals. The Ford Focus delivers superior driving dynamics, the Volkswagen Golf offers a more premium feel, and the Seat Leon provides better overall value and modern appeal. Most significantly, the Megane suffers from poor residual values and a questionable reliability record, which undermines its cost-effectiveness as a used buy. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a comfortable cruiser, it remains a viable option, but stronger alternatives exist in this competitive segment.

4.7 Overall rating
(9 reviews)I had a 2016 MK 4 Renault Megane 1.6 diesel Dynamique Nav. I absolutely loved this car. Unfortunately, it got written off, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, reliable, economic car.
Good car with £0 tax, cheap Insurance, a real work horse , minimal faults, great runner and great fuel economy
Great value for money. Comfortable and economical plus very reliable.
It is simply awesome, smooth and comfortable to drive
It’s a lot of car for not a lot of money. I grabbed a great bargain with this car. Apple play , in addition to all the toys and extras including pearlescent paint for a fraction of the BMW 3 series touring I was considering. Not my 1st Renault but I’m glad I chose this one
