Renault Zoe (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Long range for a small EV | Poor Euro NCAP safety rating |
| Good to drive | Not as desirable as some rivals |
| Practical cabin | Rapid charging ability costs extra |
Quick Summary
The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) is a thoroughly revamped electric supermini that pioneered affordable EV motoring. The latest generation features new styling, improved interior technology, increased range, and enhanced performance. With a 134bhp motor option, the Zoe feels brisk in town and exceptionally smooth thanks to its electric drivetrain. The cabin is airy and spacious with good visibility, whilst the 338-litre boot is practical for a supermini. Charging at home via a wall box takes around nine hours for a full charge, whilst the optional 50kW DC Rapid Charge upgrade reduces this to just over an hour at public fast-charge stations.
Running costs are exceptionally affordable compared to petrol or diesel cars, with full charges costing around half the price of a petrol tank. The Zoe is exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty and London's Congestion Charge. Renault has ditched the battery lease option, making ownership straightforward and improving resale values. However, the Zoe now faces stiff competition from the Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, and the larger but cheaper MG4. Its poor Euro NCAP safety rating is a concern, and rapid charging capability requires an optional upgrade.
Best for: Budget-conscious EV buyers seeking a practical, affordable electric supermini with good range and smooth, quiet driving characteristics.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising the latest safety ratings, buyers wanting rapid charging as standard, or those seeking a more desirable badge than Renault.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Zoe | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.3% | 4.1/5 |
| MG4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 29.2% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Zoe if: You're a budget-conscious EV buyer seeking a practical, affordable electric supermini with good range and smooth, quiet driving characteristics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the latest safety ratings, want rapid charging as standard, or seek a more desirable badge than Renault.
Competitive Position: The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) remains a competitive and likeable electric car with impressive range for its size and practical cabin space. However, it now faces formidable rivals including the MG4, which is larger and cheaper, and the MINI Electric, which offers superior badge appeal. The Zoe's poor Euro NCAP safety rating is a significant concern, and rapid charging capability requires an optional upgrade. If you can find a great deal, the Zoe is still tempting, but it's no longer the default choice in the affordable electric supermini segment.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)We were looking for a small car with good range without it costing the earth. Looking at prices we targeted a Renault Zoe, R135 GT Line with Rapid/ CCS charging. Neither my wife or myself had ever driven an automatic or EV. We were amazed at the vehicle, nice drive and handling, very brisk and the level of tech with newer/ EVs is impressive. In fact there is so much tech on board I dont know if we will ever find everything but if you are looking for a second user EV, with great spec, great range a used Renault Zoe is a great starting point. Checking prices on CarGurus helped to give us an idea of what sort of prices these vehicles were going for....seems second user vehicles are now affordable for many, thanks.
Fantastic first car for my daughter to learn to drive in. Locally. All electric features Only issue is fully charged battery 8 years old only provides around 80 miles of driving.
Brilliant car to drive and looks very nice. Steering feels smooth.
