Renault Zoe (2020-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Long range for a small EV	Poor Euro NCAP safety rating
Good to drive	Not as desirable as some rivals
Practical cabin	Rapid charging ability costs extra

Quick Summary

The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) is a thoroughly revamped electric supermini that pioneered affordable EV motoring for mainstream manufacturers. This second-generation model features new styling, improved interior technology, an increased range, and enhanced performance compared to its predecessor. With a lofty seating position typical of electric cars, the Zoe offers good visibility and an airy cabin. The 338-litre boot is practical for its class, though a large load lip and step when folding rear seats can be inconvenient. Interior materials are adequate for the price point but unremarkable.

The Zoe delivers brisk performance, particularly the higher-powered 134bhp variant, which feels very responsive up to 50mph and zips around town effortlessly. Like all electric cars, it's exceptionally quiet and smooth with no gears to shift. Ride quality is mostly good, and it handles motorways competently whilst offering reasonable fun on B-roads, though it can be bouncy at times. Running costs are exceptionally affordable compared to petrol or diesel cars, with home charging costing roughly half a tank of fuel. The optional 50kW DC Rapid Charge upgrade enables 0-80% charging in just over an hour at public stations. However, the Zoe now faces stiff competition from rivals like the Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, and the larger but cheaper MG4.

Best for: Budget-conscious EV buyers seeking a practical, affordable electric supermini with decent range and smooth, quiet driving characteristics.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising the latest safety ratings, buyers seeking premium desirability, or those unwilling to pay extra for rapid charging capability.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Zoe if: You're a budget-conscious EV buyer seeking a practical, affordable electric supermini with decent range and smooth, quiet driving characteristics.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the latest safety ratings, seek premium desirability, or are unwilling to pay extra for rapid charging capability.

Competitive Position: The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) remains a competitive and likeable electric car in the supermini segment, offering long range, good driving dynamics, and a practical cabin at an accessible price point. However, it now faces impressive rivals including the MG4, which offers more value, and the Skoda Enyaq, which provides a larger package. The Zoe's poor Euro NCAP safety rating is a concern, and it's no longer the default electric supermini choice. If you can find a great deal, the Zoe is still tempting, but careful comparison with rivals is essential.
