Renault Zoe (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Long range for a small EV | Poor Euro NCAP safety rating |
| Good to drive | Not as desirable as some rivals |
| Practical cabin | Rapid charging ability costs extra |
Quick Summary
The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) was a pioneer in the affordable electric car market, and this updated version brought improved styling, tech, and performance. As a five-door-only supermini, it offers easy access to a reasonably spacious cabin, though you sit quite high due to the underfloor batteries. Practicality is a strong point, with a 338-litre boot that is generous for its class, surpassing rivals like the MINI Electric and Peugeot e-208, although larger EVs like the Nissan Leaf offer more interior room.
With the more powerful 134bhp motor, the Zoe feels very brisk around town, delivering the quiet and smooth driving experience typical of an EV. The ride is generally comfortable, and it feels capable on motorways. Running costs are exceptionally low, with exemptions from VED and the London Congestion Charge. However, a key consideration is that the ability to use 50kW DC rapid chargers was an optional extra, meaning not all used examples can be replenished quickly at public stations.
Best for: City drivers and those looking for a practical, low-cost-to-run small EV with a competitive real-world range for its class.
Not ideal for: Buyers who prioritise safety ratings, need rapid charging as a standard feature, or want the most up-to-date model in a rapidly evolving market.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Zoe | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.3% | 4.1/5 |
| Nissan Leaf | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 36.8% | 4.1/5 |
| MG4 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 36.0% | 4.3/5 |
| MINI Electric | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 32.5% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Zoe if: You want a practical and affordable used EV that's good to drive around town and offers a useful battery range for its size.
Consider alternatives if: You are concerned by its poor Euro NCAP safety rating, require rapid charging as standard, or prefer a newer, more modern rival.
Competitive Position: The Renault Zoe is a stalwart of the EV sector, but it no longer leads the pack. While it remains a likeable electric car with a decent range and practical cabin, it faces formidable competition from rivals like the Peugeot e-208 and the great value MG4. Its poor safety rating is a major drawback, making it a car to consider only if you can find a great deal on a well-specified model.

4.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)We were looking for a small car with good range without it costing the earth. Looking at prices we targeted a Renault Zoe, R135 GT Line with Rapid/ CCS charging. Neither my wife or myself had ever driven an automatic or EV. We were amazed at the vehicle, nice drive and handling, very brisk and the level of tech with newer/ EVs is impressive. In fact there is so much tech on board I dont know if we will ever find everything but if you are looking for a second user EV, with great spec, great range a used Renault Zoe is a great starting point. Checking prices on CarGurus helped to give us an idea of what sort of prices these vehicles were going for....seems second user vehicles are now affordable for many, thanks.
Fantastic first car for my daughter to learn to drive in. Locally. All electric features Only issue is fully charged battery 8 years old only provides around 80 miles of driving.
Brilliant car to drive and looks very nice. Steering feels smooth.
This is one lovely little car! Spacious inside ; cabin and boot space, with great visibility. Being an older model it has a slower charge rate and less range than newer versions but for the sort of mileage we do, it’s fine., around 100 miles from a full charge. As an economic first foray into EVs very happy so far
