Renault Zoe (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Long range for a small EV | Poor Euro NCAP safety rating |
| Good to drive | Not as desirable as some rivals |
| Practical cabin | Rapid charging ability costs extra |
Quick Summary
The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) is a revamped version of an EV pioneer, offering improved styling, tech, range, and performance. It's a brisk and smooth electric supermini, particularly agile in urban settings, and comfortable enough for motorway driving. Its airy and spacious cabin, along with a 338-litre boot, provides good practicality for its class.
Running costs are exceptionally affordable, with home charging significantly cheaper than petrol/diesel, and the Zoe is exempt from VED and London's Congestion Charge. While the battery lease option is gone, ownership is straightforward. An optional 50kW DC Rapid Charge upgrade allows for quick public charging, though home charging takes around nine hours. Despite its competitive nature and improved performance, its poor Euro NCAP safety rating and strong rivals are points of concern.
Best for: Drivers seeking an affordable, practical, and efficient small electric car, urban commuters, and those looking for low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising top-tier safety ratings (Euro NCAP), those who need rapid charging as standard, or those who desire a more premium badge/driving experience than its rivals offer.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault Zoe | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 31.3% | 4.1/5 |
| Nissan Leaf | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 33.6% | 4.1/5 |
| MG4 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| MINI Electric | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.1% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Zoe if: You're on a budget for an EV, seeking a practical and efficient small electric car for urban commuting, or prioritising low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise top-tier safety ratings (Euro NCAP), need rapid charging as standard, or desire a more premium badge/driving experience than its rivals offer.
Competitive Position: The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) remains a competitive option in the electric supermini market, benefiting from its earlier pioneering status and recent updates. It offers good practicality, comfortable driving, and exceptionally low running costs, making it appealing for budget-conscious EV buyers. However, its poor Euro NCAP safety rating and the rise of strong rivals like the Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, and the larger, cheaper MG4 mean it's no longer the default choice. While it provides good value, buyers seeking cutting-edge safety or standard rapid charging might look elsewhere.

4.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)We were looking for a small car with good range without it costing the earth. Looking at prices we targeted a Renault Zoe, R135 GT Line with Rapid/ CCS charging. Neither my wife or myself had ever driven an automatic or EV. We were amazed at the vehicle, nice drive and handling, very brisk and the level of tech with newer/ EVs is impressive. In fact there is so much tech on board I dont know if we will ever find everything but if you are looking for a second user EV, with great spec, great range a used Renault Zoe is a great starting point. Checking prices on CarGurus helped to give us an idea of what sort of prices these vehicles were going for....seems second user vehicles are now affordable for many, thanks.
Fantastic first car for my daughter to learn to drive in. Locally. All electric features Only issue is fully charged battery 8 years old only provides around 80 miles of driving.
Brilliant car to drive and looks very nice. Steering feels smooth.
This is one lovely little car! Spacious inside ; cabin and boot space, with great visibility. Being an older model it has a slower charge rate and less range than newer versions but for the sort of mileage we do, it’s fine., around 100 miles from a full charge. As an economic first foray into EVs very happy so far
