Renault Zoe (2020-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Long range for a small EV | Poor Euro NCAP safety rating |
| Good to drive | Not as desirable as some rivals |
| Practical cabin | Rapid charging ability costs extra |
Quick Summary
The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) is a thoroughly revamped electric supermini that pioneered affordable EV motoring for mainstream buyers. This second-generation model features new styling, improved interior technology, an increased range, and enhanced performance with a more powerful 134bhp motor option. The cabin is airy and spacious with good visibility, whilst the 338-litre boot is practical for a supermini, though a large load lip and step in the load area when folding seats can be inconvenient. The Zoe offers fair-to-middling interior space, outperforming rivals like the MINI Electric and Honda E, though the VW ID.3 and Nissan Leaf provide more room.
The Zoe is exceptionally smooth and quiet to drive, zipping around town effortlessly with the higher-powered motor. Running costs are significantly lower than petrol or diesel equivalents, with home charging costing roughly half a tank of fuel. The model is exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty and London's Congestion Charge. However, the optional 50kW DC Rapid Charge upgrade is essential for faster public charging, taking just over an hour for an 80% charge. Replacement tyres are inexpensive, though insurance costs are higher than the petrol Clio. The Zoe remains competitive, but now faces impressive rivals including the Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, and the larger, cheaper MG4.
Best for: Budget-conscious EV buyers seeking a practical, long-range electric supermini with low running costs and smooth, quiet driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising top safety ratings, premium desirability, or who require rapid charging without additional cost, or buyers wanting maximum interior space.

The Verdict
You should buy the Zoe if: You're a budget-conscious EV buyer seeking a practical, long-range electric supermini with low running costs and smooth, quiet driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise top safety ratings, premium desirability, require rapid charging without additional cost, or need maximum interior space.
Competitive Position: The Renault Zoe (2020-2024) remains a competitive and likeable electric supermini with proven reliability and a loyal following. Whilst it offers long range, practical cabin space, and excellent running costs, it now faces impressive rivals. The MG4 is larger and cheaper, the MINI Electric offers more desirability, and the Nissan Leaf provides more interior room. The Zoe's poor Euro NCAP safety rating is a concern, and rapid charging requires an optional upgrade. However, if you can find a great deal, the Zoe is still tempting for those prioritising practicality and affordability over premium appeal or maximum safety credentials.

4.8 Overall rating
(4 reviews)We were looking for a small car with good range without it costing the earth. Looking at prices we targeted a Renault Zoe, R135 GT Line with Rapid/ CCS charging. Neither my wife or myself had ever driven an automatic or EV. We were amazed at the vehicle, nice drive and handling, very brisk and the level of tech with newer/ EVs is impressive. In fact there is so much tech on board I dont know if we will ever find everything but if you are looking for a second user EV, with great spec, great range a used Renault Zoe is a great starting point. Checking prices on CarGurus helped to give us an idea of what sort of prices these vehicles were going for....seems second user vehicles are now affordable for many, thanks.
Fantastic first car for my daughter to learn to drive in. Locally. All electric features Only issue is fully charged battery 8 years old only provides around 80 miles of driving.
Brilliant car to drive and looks very nice. Steering feels smooth.
This is one lovely little car! Spacious inside ; cabin and boot space, with great visibility. Being an older model it has a slower charge rate and less range than newer versions but for the sort of mileage we do, it’s fine., around 100 miles from a full charge. As an economic first foray into EVs very happy so far
