Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Fantastically practical Some potential reliability issues
Sliding doors a real boon Ford S-Max is better to drive
Surprisingly enjoyable to drive Luggage space tight with all seven seats in place

Quick Summary

The Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) is a seven-seat MPV that represents a significant improvement over its predecessor. Longer and wider than the original model, it offers substantially improved cabin space with room for a full-grown adult in each of its seven seats. The practical sliding doors make passenger access easier in tight car park spaces, whilst integrated child seats and Isofix mounts across all rear seats cater to families. With the third row folded away, boot space expands to 809 litres, and with both rear rows stowed, it increases to an impressive 2,430 litres, making it exceptionally versatile for luggage and cargo.

The Alhambra delivers surprising driving enjoyment for an MPV, with decent body control, plenty of grip, and assured steering that makes it gratifying to drive. Diesel engines offer the best balance of performance and economy, with the later 148bhp and 181bhp units delivering realistic real-world fuel consumption in the low-to-mid 40s mpg. Insurance groups remain reasonable, starting from group 13 for early diesels. Whilst reliability concerns exist, a well-maintained example with full service history represents an excellent practical family vehicle that rivals the Ford S-Max for driving engagement.

Best for: Families needing seven seats, those prioritising practicality and versatility, drivers seeking an MPV that's enjoyable to drive, and buyers wanting excellent luggage space.

Not ideal for: Those concerned about potential reliability issues, buyers seeking the sharpest driving dynamics (Ford S-Max), or those requiring maximum boot space with all seats in use.

The Verdict

You should buy the Alhambra if: You're a family needing seven seats, prioritising practicality and versatility, seeking an MPV that's enjoyable to drive, or wanting excellent luggage space and flexible seating.

Consider alternatives if: You're concerned about potential reliability issues, prioritise the sharpest driving dynamics, or require maximum boot space with all seats in use.

Competitive Position: The Seat Alhambra (2010-2020) is a standout choice in the seven-seat MPV market, offering exceptional practicality with clever seating arrangements and impressive versatility. Whilst the Volkswagen Sharan shares its platform and offers similar practicality, the Alhambra delivers more engaging driving dynamics. The Ford S-Max provides sharper handling but with less practical flexibility, whilst the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso offers good value. Despite reliability concerns, a well-maintained Alhambra represents outstanding value for families seeking a practical, enjoyable-to-drive seven-seater with excellent cargo space and thoughtful family-friendly features.

Giving it 5* as it does look nice in battleship grey as I call it, and it drives lovely, has a lot of toys, 240v inverter, blinds in rear doors are just to name some of the items that were not mentioned.. to get the same spec in the VW Sharan, you would probably look at an additional £2k However, the leg space in the 2nd row isnt the best, felt there is more in a Vauxhall Zafira. And if I would have really searched I would have preferred the same spec car but without leather, not a fan of sticky back and legs!
