Skoda Octavia (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Larger than its rivals – and cheaper to boot	There are more exciting family cars out there
Comfortable and refined driving experience	Not quite the bargain Skodas used to be
Thoughtfully designed and well-built interior	No fully electric version

Quick Summary

The Skoda Octavia (2020-present) epitomises everything Skoda buyers love about the brand: a bigger-than-average car for a smaller-than-average price. Available as a five-door hatchback and estate, it remains Skoda's best-selling model despite the introduction of fashionable SUVs. The latest generation was launched in 2020 and received a midlife update in 2024. It competes directly with the Volkswagen Golf, Kia Ceed, Seat Leon and Vauxhall Astra, offering class-leading practicality with a 600-litre boot (hatchback) or 640-litre boot (estate) – around 200 litres larger than rivals. The cabin is pleasantly trimmed and well-made, with every version coming superbly equipped as standard.

The Octavia delivers a sophisticated, grown-up driving experience with a comfortable ride and impressive refinement at all speeds. Engine options include a 114bhp 1.5-litre petrol, 2.0-litre diesels with 114bhp or 148bhp, and the sporty vRS with a 261bhp 2.0-litre petrol. Mainstream petrols achieve mid-fifties mpg, whilst diesels deliver mid-sixties mpg – ideal for high-mileage drivers. The vRS achieves around 40mpg. Service intervals are every 12 months or 10,000 miles, with condition-based servicing available for high-mileage drivers. Skoda offers fixed-price servicing plans to help budget for maintenance costs effectively.

Best for: Families seeking maximum practicality, space and value; buyers wanting a well-rounded, comfortable and refined family car; those prioritising comfort over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking the most exciting or agile family hatchback; buyers requiring a fully electric option; those wanting the premium badge appeal of a Volkswagen Golf.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Octavia if: You're a family seeking maximum practicality and space, wanting a well-rounded, comfortable and refined car, or prioritising value for money over driving excitement.

Consider alternatives if: You desire the most exciting or agile family hatchback, require a fully electric option, or want the premium badge appeal of a Volkswagen Golf.

Competitive Position: The Skoda Octavia (2020-present) is the standout choice in the family hatchback segment, offering class-leading practicality, space and value. Whilst the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus may appeal to those seeking premium badge appeal or more engaging driving dynamics respectively, the Octavia's generous dimensions, thoughtfully designed interior, impressive equipment levels and competitive pricing make it the most well-rounded option. It's perhaps not the most exciting choice, but it's easily the most practical and best value for families prioritising comfort and space.
