Skoda Octavia (2004-2012) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Delivers spacious and sensible motoring | Early diesel engines are a little gruff |
| vRS versions combine performance and practicality | Not the most glamorous of badges |
| Good value for money | Stereo systems not the best |
Quick Summary
The Skoda Octavia (2004-2012), known as the Mk2, is a spacious and sensible family car that builds upon the strengths of its predecessor. It offers impressive practicality with 560 litres of boot space in hatchback form and 605 litres in the estate, more than many cars from the class above. The interior is uninteresting but compensated by vast amounts of space, excellent legroom, and head and elbow room throughout. It was one of the most practical cars of its type and remains bigger inside than most modern hatchbacks.
The Octavia is a pleasant, comfortable, and composed car to drive, with accurate steering, a pliant ride, and precise controls. It was offered with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, including the popular 1.8 TSI and 2.0-litre TDI diesel, with manual and automatic transmissions available. Some versions feature four-wheel drive for poor weather conditions. Running costs are reasonable, with 1.8 TSI petrol models averaging around 40mpg and Greenline variants achieving up to 60mpg in real-world driving. The high-performance vRS combines performance with practicality, whilst parts availability and aftermarket support remain good. Timing belt replacement is required on many variants, typically costing around £500 or more.
Best for: Buyers seeking spacious and sensible motoring, families requiring practicality and comfort, those wanting performance with practicality (vRS), and those seeking a less costly alternative to premium marques.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium badge appeal, those seeking the most glamorous styling, or those wanting the finest audio systems as standard.

The Verdict

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium badge appeal, seek the most glamorous styling, or require the finest audio systems as standard.
Competitive Position: The Skoda Octavia (2004-2012) is an eminently sensible purchase in the family car market, offering exceptional spaciousness and practicality that rivals or exceeds cars from the class above. Whilst the Ford Mondeo edges ahead on expert rating, the Octavia provides superior value and practicality compared to the Volkswagen Passat. It serves as a more affordable alternative to premium marques like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, whilst the vRS variant combines performance with practicality. With good reliability, reasonable running costs, and extensive parts availability, the Octavia represents a compelling choice for those prioritising space and value over badge prestige.

What people say
Thirs octavia vrs Ive owned , cars are just great, w.0 litre diesel , good power at 184 bhp . Drives smooth , gearbox good . Great looking cars . Also a product of vw Audi. Easy to operate with all the tech. Glad it doesnt have that stupid collision system in it . Its so annoying in my Last car vauxhall insignia . Never again
The features were excellent ,it represents good value for money given the low mileage of this car. There was nothing missing as far as we could tell.I would compare this car with the Ford Mondeo
Huge boot, great for all my work and fishing equipment. Almost identical to its VW cousin the Passat. would like the extra seat adjustments that are on the Passat.
