Subaru XV (2018-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Much tougher and more able off road than most rivals | Limited choice of engines |
| Comprehensive safety equipment | Not as good to drive as a Seat Ateca |
| No-nonsense reliability | Pricey to buy as a new car |
Quick Summary
The Subaru XV (2018-2023) is a compact crossover that prioritises genuine off-road capability over style. The second-generation model, launched in 2018, represents a significant improvement over its predecessor, featuring Subaru's excellent four-wheel-drive system and X-Mode traction control. With a 340-litre boot and comfortable front seating, it offers practicality for those who venture beyond tarmac. The cabin features a rally-inspired design with a chunky three-spoke steering wheel and drilled metal pedals, though materials feel functional rather than premium. All models come with Subaru's Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission, with engine options limited to a 112bhp 1.6-litre petrol, a 154bhp 2.0-litre petrol, and from 2020, a 2.0-litre hybrid e-Boxer.
The XV delivers direct steering and neat handling on tarmac, though the firm ride and modest performance mean it's not the most engaging to drive. Real-world fuel economy sits in the 30-35mpg range, and the absence of a diesel option is a notable drawback compared to rivals. Servicing is required every 12 months or 12,000 miles, and Subaru's smaller dealer network may require travelling further for maintenance. As a used car, the XV makes most sense for rural drivers who genuinely need all-weather, off-road capability and value no-nonsense reliability over driving dynamics.
Best for: Rural drivers needing genuine off-road capability, buyers prioritising all-weather reliability, and those seeking comprehensive safety equipment and four-wheel-drive prowess.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking the best on-road handling (like a Seat Ateca), those wanting maximum comfort (like a Skoda Karoq), high-mileage drivers requiring diesel efficiency, or buyers needing a spacious boot.

The Verdict
You should buy the XV if: You're a rural driver needing genuine off-road capability, prioritise all-weather reliability, or seek comprehensive safety equipment and four-wheel-drive prowess.
Consider alternatives if: You want the best on-road handling, maximum comfort, diesel efficiency for high-mileage driving, or a spacious boot.
Competitive Position: The Subaru XV (2018-2023) occupies a unique niche in the compact SUV market by prioritising genuine off-road ability over on-road refinement. Whilst the Skoda Karoq offers superior comfort and practicality, and the Seat Ateca delivers better driving dynamics, the XV's authentic four-wheel-drive system and no-nonsense reliability make it the standout choice for those who genuinely venture off the beaten track. For urban and suburban drivers, rivals offer better value and more engaging driving experiences. However, for rural buyers who need a capable, dependable companion that will tackle challenging terrain, the XV's limited engine range and firm ride are minor compromises. As a used car, it represents excellent value for those with specific off-road requirements.
