Suzuki Swift (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fun to drive	Not as cheap as it once was
Low running costs	Small boot for the supermini class
Well equipped as standard	Rivals offer more passenger space

Quick Summary

The Suzuki Swift (2024-present) is a straightforward, petrol-powered supermini that represents a refreshing alternative in a market where rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Nissan Micra have been discontinued. Now in its fourth generation, the Swift uses the same platform as its predecessor but benefits from a modern design and comprehensive standard equipment across both Motion and Ultra trim levels. At just under 3.9 metres long and weighing between 949kg and 1,037kg, it's slightly smaller than key rivals, offering a 265-litre boot expandable to 589 litres with rear seats folded.

Powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with mild hybrid assistance, the Swift produces 82bhp and delivers genuine driving enjoyment with agile handling and well-weighted steering. The manual gearbox offers a slick action, whilst both manual and CVT automatic options are available, with all-wheel-drive AllGrip available on the top Ultra trim. Real-world fuel economy exceeds 52mpg, and both trims come packed with features including heated seats, air-conditioning, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with integrated satnav, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and comprehensive active safety systems. However, insurance groupings of 25-28 are notably high for an 82bhp supermini, which may deter younger drivers.

Best for: Drivers seeking a fun, well-equipped supermini with low running costs, those valuing dynamic handling and modern technology, and buyers comfortable with a smaller boot in exchange for driving enjoyment.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior or boot space, young drivers concerned about insurance costs, or buyers seeking the cheapest possible supermini option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Swift if: You're seeking a fun, well-equipped supermini with low running costs, value dynamic handling and modern technology, or want a refreshing alternative to mainstream rivals.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior or boot space, are concerned about insurance costs, or need the cheapest possible supermini option.

Competitive Position: The Suzuki Swift (2024-present) is an excellent choice in the supermini market, offering genuine driving enjoyment, comprehensive standard equipment, and impressive fuel economy. Whilst it's slightly smaller than rivals like the Skoda Fabia and Vauxhall Corsa, this is offset by its fun-to-drive character and well-weighted steering. The Swift outperforms the Dacia Sandero in terms of refinement and technology, and represents a compelling alternative to discontinued models like the Ford Fiesta. Its main drawback is the unusually high insurance grouping for its engine size, which may deter cost-conscious buyers. For those prioritising driving dynamics and modern features over maximum space, the Swift is a standout proposition.
