Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent range and rapid charging | Would really benefit from a head-up display |
| Lots of standard kit | Firm ride |
| Roomy and practical | Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is a spacious, electric mid-sized family SUV with five seats as standard. Available in Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and Long Range All-Wheel Drive variants, it offers impressive official WLTP ranges from 311 to 387 miles. The 2025 facelift brought a striking new design inspired by the Cybertruck, upgraded interior materials, improved suspension, enhanced efficiency, and power-folding rear seats. It's one of the most practical cars in its class, with excellent boot space (854 litres), a spacious cabin with heated seats and climate controls, and an enormous frunk.
The Model Y is fast and enjoyable to drive, with responsive steering, neutral handling, and four-wheel-drive capability for all-weather confidence. The 2025 update significantly improved ride comfort, though it remains fairly firm. Running costs are very competitive, with real-world efficiency delivering 240–340 miles per charge depending on the variant. Home charging costs around 7p per mile on standard tariffs or as little as 2p per mile on off-peak rates. Tesla Superchargers offer some of the cheapest rapid charging available, and the Model Y's pricing remains competitive compared to rival premium electric SUVs.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, efficient electric SUV with excellent range, rapid charging capability, and comprehensive standard technology; those prioritising value in the premium EV segment.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting a head-up display, those preferring a softer ride, or those seeking premium cabin quality comparable to BMW or Mercedes.

| Tesla Model Y | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 40.3% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Model Y if: You're seeking a spacious, efficient electric SUV with excellent range, rapid charging capability, and comprehensive standard technology, or prioritising value in the premium EV segment.
Consider alternatives if: You want a head-up display, prefer a softer ride, or require premium cabin quality comparable to BMW or Mercedes.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a brilliant electric family car that remains one of the most comprehensive pure electric SUVs available. It offers excellent range, rapid charging via the extensive Supercharger network, and competitive pricing that has improved further following the 2025 refresh. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq iV offers superior expert ratings and the BMW iX3 provides classier cabin finishes, the Model Y's combination of practicality, efficiency, and value makes it a strong contender. The Ford Mustang Mach-E scores highly with users, but the Model Y's spaciousness and charging infrastructure give it a significant advantage for long-distance touring. It should remain near the top of any shortlist for buyers considering an electric family SUV in this price range.

4.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)I returned a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to Porsche and bought the Tesla Model Y. The higher Y is easier to access (Im physically disabled) and exit, and its boot is more spacious to take my walker. It offers better visibility and for me more comfortable seating. The big screen on the Y can access all the info on the 3 screens of the Taycan, and in-car storage is much better. I dont regret the change.
Let’s start with the negatives. Drive and handling terrible. No parking sensors. Cheap leather interior. Rear view visual too small. The large iPad like control not issuable while driving. Voice command does not work well either. No dashboard behind the wheel. Cheap plastic exterior. All in all just too pricey. Positives. Good battery. Large boot space easy charging.
Coming from a 2019 Tesla model 3 performance, everything is improved, it’s much quieter when driving, build quality is much better. The only thing that lets it down is that they have done away with parking sensors, big mistake. The model Y Performance is brilliant. Build quality matches my BMW IX, it really is that good.
