Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent range and rapid charging | Would really benefit from a head-up display |
| Lots of standard kit | Firm ride |
| Roomy and practical | Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is an electric, mid-sized family SUV, primarily offered with five seats. It boasts impressive range figures, with the RWD starting at 311 miles (WLTP) and the Long Range RWD achieving 387 miles. Based on the Model 3, it offers enhanced practicality with a surprisingly large boot and an enormous frunk. A 2025 facelift introduced a new look, upgraded interior materials, tweaked suspension for improved ride comfort, and better efficiency, making it a well-equipped and spacious option in its segment.
Driving the Model Y is a thrilling experience thanks to its rapid acceleration and grippy, neutral handling, especially in AWD variants. While the ride can still be firm, the 2025 update significantly improved damping. It features a highly advanced, large central touchscreen controlling most functions, intuitive navigation, and sophisticated semi-autonomous driving capabilities as standard. Running costs are low due to its efficiency and access to Tesla's affordable Supercharger network, making it a competitively priced and high-value long-range electric SUV.
Best for: Drivers seeking a spacious, technologically advanced, and efficient electric family SUV with rapid charging and access to the Supercharger network, or buyers looking for competitive pricing and strong residual values.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a head-up display, a premium interior finish (like BMW or Mercedes), or a softer, less firm ride.

The Verdict
You should buy the Tesla Model Y if: You're seeking a spacious, technologically advanced, and efficient electric family SUV with rapid charging and access to the Supercharger network, or looking for competitive pricing and strong residual values.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a head-up display, a premium interior finish (like BMW or Mercedes), or a softer, less firm ride.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a formidable contender in the electric family SUV segment, offering a compelling blend of space, technology, and driving confidence. Its competitive pricing, strong residual values, and access to the efficient Supercharger network make it an excellent choice for long-distance electric travel. While the 2025 facelift brought welcome improvements to ride comfort and interior finish, rivals like the BMW iX3 may offer a more luxurious cabin or dynamic drive. Nonetheless, the Model Y remains one of the most comprehensive and attractive pure electric family SUVs available.

4.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)I returned a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to Porsche and bought the Tesla Model Y. The higher Y is easier to access (Im physically disabled) and exit, and its boot is more spacious to take my walker. It offers better visibility and for me more comfortable seating. The big screen on the Y can access all the info on the 3 screens of the Taycan, and in-car storage is much better. I dont regret the change.
Let’s start with the negatives. Drive and handling terrible. No parking sensors. Cheap leather interior. Rear view visual too small. The large iPad like control not issuable while driving. Voice command does not work well either. No dashboard behind the wheel. Cheap plastic exterior. All in all just too pricey. Positives. Good battery. Large boot space easy charging.
Coming from a 2019 Tesla model 3 performance, everything is improved, it’s much quieter when driving, build quality is much better. The only thing that lets it down is that they have done away with parking sensors, big mistake. The model Y Performance is brilliant. Build quality matches my BMW IX, it really is that good.
