Reviewed a 2022 Tesla Model Y on 10 Aug 2022
I returned a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to Porsche and bought the Tesla Model Y. The higher Y is easier to access (Im physically disabled) and exit, and its boot is more spacious to take my walker. It offers better visibility and for me more comfortable seating. The big screen on the Y can access all the info on the 3 screens of the Taycan, and in-car storage is much better. I dont regret the change.

Let’s start with the negatives. Drive and handling terrible. No parking sensors. Cheap leather interior. Rear view visual too small. The large iPad like control not issuable while driving. Voice command does not work well either. No dashboard behind the wheel. Cheap plastic exterior. All in all just too pricey. Positives. Good battery. Large boot space easy charging.

Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent range and rapid charging | Would really benefit from a head-up display |
| Lots of standard kit | Firm ride |
| Roomy and practical | Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is a spacious, electric mid-sized family SUV with five seats as standard. Available in three powertrains—Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and Long Range All-Wheel Drive—it offers impressive range from 311 to 387 miles depending on specification. The 2025 facelift brought a striking new design inspired by the Cybertruck, upgraded interior materials, improved suspension, and power-folding rear seats. With an 854-litre boot, masses of legroom, and an enormous frunk, it's one of the most practical electric family SUVs available.
The Model Y delivers confident, enjoyable driving with responsive steering and four-wheel-drive capability for all-weather assurance. The 2025 update significantly improved ride comfort, though it remains fairly firm. Running costs are excellent, with real-world fuel costs as low as 2p per mile on off-peak electricity tariffs. Competitively priced following its 2025 refresh, the Model Y offers outstanding value for a premium electric SUV, backed by access to Tesla's rapid Supercharger network and strong residual values. Standard equipment is generous, including semi-autonomous driving technology and over-the-air software updates.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, efficient electric SUV with excellent range, rapid charging capability, and strong technology integration; those prioritising practicality and value in the premium EV segment.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting a head-up display, those preferring a softer ride, or those seeking premium cabin finishes comparable to BMW or Mercedes standards.

The Verdict
You should buy the Model Y if: You're seeking a spacious, efficient electric family SUV with excellent range, rapid charging capability, and strong technology integration, or prioritising practicality and value in the premium EV segment.
Consider alternatives if: You want a head-up display, prefer a softer ride, or require premium cabin finishes comparable to BMW or Mercedes standards.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a brilliant, comprehensive electric family SUV that combines spaciousness, practicality, and competitive pricing with access to the excellent Supercharger network. Whilst the Skoda Enyaq offers expert-rated excellence and the BMW iX3 and Ford Mustang Mach-E provide superior cabin quality and handling dynamics respectively, the Model Y remains one of the most well-rounded choices in this segment. Its strong efficiency, rapid charging speeds, and generous standard equipment make it a compelling option for families considering a premium electric SUV, though it's no longer the default choice it once was.
