Tesla Model Y (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent range and rapid charging | Would really benefit from a head-up display |
| Lots of standard kit | Firm ride |
| Roomy and practical | Interior quality not at BMW or Mercedes levels |
Quick Summary
The Tesla Model Y (2022-present) is an electric, mid-sized family SUV known for its impressive practicality, offering ample space for passengers and cargo, including a large boot and frunk. The 2025 facelift enhanced its appeal with a refreshed design, upgraded interior, and improved ride comfort, addressing previous criticisms. It delivers strong performance with brutal acceleration and direct steering, making it an enjoyable drive, further supported by excellent range and rapid charging capabilities, leveraging Tesla's efficient Supercharger network.
The Model Y comes very well equipped as standard, featuring advanced semi-autonomous driving technology and a comprehensive, intuitive central touchscreen. Running costs are notably low due to its efficiency and competitive charging rates. While it may not match premium rivals for interior finish or offer Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, its competitive pricing, strong value retention, and comprehensive package make it a top contender in the pure electric family SUV segment.
Best for: Families needing a spacious and practical electric SUV, drivers seeking strong performance and long electric range, buyers who value advanced technology and low running costs, and those who want a car with access to a reliable rapid charging network.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising a luxurious interior finish on par with BMW or Mercedes, those who prefer physical buttons over a touchscreen for all controls, drivers who find a firm ride uncomfortable, or those who require Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.

The Verdict
You should buy the Tesla Model Y if: You're a family needing a spacious and practical electric SUV, you value strong performance, long range, advanced technology, and low running costs, especially with access to the Supercharger network.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a more luxurious interior finish, prefer physical controls over a central touchscreen, find a firm ride uncomfortable, or require Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
Competitive Position: The Tesla Model Y is a brilliant electric family car, offering exceptional space, confident driving dynamics, and a wealth of technology. Its competitive pricing, strong value retention, and access to the efficient Supercharger network make it a compelling choice. While rivals like the BMW iX3 might offer a classier finish and the Skoda Enyaq provides strong competition in range, the Model Y remains one of the most comprehensive pure electric family SUVs available, especially after its 2025 update.

4.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)I returned a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to Porsche and bought the Tesla Model Y. The higher Y is easier to access (Im physically disabled) and exit, and its boot is more spacious to take my walker. It offers better visibility and for me more comfortable seating. The big screen on the Y can access all the info on the 3 screens of the Taycan, and in-car storage is much better. I dont regret the change.
Let’s start with the negatives. Drive and handling terrible. No parking sensors. Cheap leather interior. Rear view visual too small. The large iPad like control not issuable while driving. Voice command does not work well either. No dashboard behind the wheel. Cheap plastic exterior. All in all just too pricey. Positives. Good battery. Large boot space easy charging.
Coming from a 2019 Tesla model 3 performance, everything is improved, it’s much quieter when driving, build quality is much better. The only thing that lets it down is that they have done away with parking sensors, big mistake. The model Y Performance is brilliant. Build quality matches my BMW IX, it really is that good.
