The Toyota Aygo (2014-2022), the second-generation model, is a compact, efficient, and reliable city car that competes with the Fiat 500, Volkswagen Up, and Skoda Citigo. It retains the strengths of its predecessor, including a compact footprint and low running costs, whilst adding more playful exterior styling and modern features. The Aygo shares its underpinnings with the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108. Available in three-door and five-door versions, the range was later slimmed to just the five-door model. Powered by a single 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp (later 71bhp), the Aygo accelerates from 0-62mph in around 14 seconds with a top speed of 99mph. It claims to average more than 60mpg and easily returns over 50mpg in real-world driving. An automated manual transmission is available, though the manual remains more popular. The Aygo excels in town driving with excellent manoeuvrability and comfort, but struggles on motorways where the engine becomes noisy and strained. Running costs are exceptionally low, with no VED on pre-April 2017 models, inexpensive servicing around £145, and small, affordable tyres. The timing chain engine eliminates costly belt replacement concerns. As a used car, it represents outstanding value for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliability and low ownership costs.
