Toyota C-HR (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Low running costs	Expensive compared with rivals
Distinctive styling	Safety systems can be overly intrusive
Good to drive	Lots of random beeps and bongs

Quick Summary

The Toyota C-HR is a five-seater compact crossover designed and built in Europe with European customers in mind. This second-generation model stands out with its concept car-like styling, including the option of a bold two-tone paint scheme. Available as either a self-charging hybrid or plug-in hybrid, it promises low running costs and Toyota's trademark excellent reliability. Whilst not the cheapest option in this ultra-competitive sector, the C-HR offers roomy accommodation for four people in comfort, with decent legroom and headroom despite the sloping roofline. Boot capacity ranges from 310 litres (plug-in hybrid) to 388 litres (1.8-litre self-charging hybrid).

The self-charging hybrid system is extremely smooth and quiet at low speeds, with the potential to cover up to 50% of town driving in electric mode. The 2.0-litre self-charging hybrid offers more muscular performance than the 1.8-litre version, whilst the plug-in hybrid delivers 220bhp and an electric-only range of up to 41 miles. The C-HR strikes a good balance between entertaining handling and a comfortable ride, with meaningful steering weight and consistent brake feel. Running costs are impressive, with both self-charging hybrids achieving upwards of 50mpg in mixed driving. However, the active driver assist systems can be overly intrusive, and insurance groups sit fairly high for this class.

Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, efficient, and reliable compact crossover with low running costs, and those who value distinctive design and driving enjoyment over outright practicality.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers prioritising the cheapest option in the class, those who find active safety systems annoying, or customers requiring maximum boot space and interior versatility.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C-HR if: You seek a stylish, efficient, and reliable compact crossover with low running costs, and value distinctive design and driving enjoyment over outright practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious and prioritise the cheapest option in the class, find active safety systems annoying, or require maximum boot space and interior versatility.

Competitive Position: The Toyota C-HR is a very good all-rounder in the compact crossover segment, offering bold styling, impressive efficiency, and enjoyable driving dynamics. Whilst it is more expensive than several rivals and its active safety systems can be intrusive, its low running costs, Toyota reliability, and distinctive design make it highly recommendable. The Nissan Qashqai edges ahead on user ratings and value, whilst the Volkswagen T-Roc offers a more premium feel. However, the C-HR remains a compelling choice for those prioritising efficiency and style over budget considerations.
