Toyota C-HR (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Low running costs Expensive compared with rivals
Distinctive styling Safety systems can be overly intrusive
Good to drive Lots of random beeps and bongs

Quick Summary

The Toyota C-HR is a compact crossover with striking, concept-car-like styling that sets it apart from rivals like the VW T-Roc and Nissan Qashqai. Available exclusively as a self-charging or plug-in hybrid, it prioritises low running costs and benefits from Toyota’s excellent reputation for reliability. While it's priced at the premium end of its class, the distinctive design makes a bold statement. Inside, there's comfortable space for four adults, but practicality is mixed; boot capacity is adequate in the 1.8-litre hybrid (388 litres) but is reduced in 2.0-litre and plug-in hybrid versions.

On the road, the C-HR is smooth and quiet, especially in town where it can run frequently on electric power. The CVT automatic gearbox can cause engine drone under hard acceleration, a trait less noticeable in the more powerful 2.0-litre and plug-in hybrid models. The car balances a comfortable ride with engaging handling. Most trims feature a modern infotainment system with large screens, but the over-eager driver assistance systems can be intrusive with frequent alerts, which may frustrate some drivers.

Best for: Drivers who prioritise distinctive styling, low running costs from an efficient hybrid system, and a comfortable, enjoyable driving experience.

Not ideal for: Buyers on a tight budget, those who need the largest possible boot, or drivers who are easily annoyed by overactive safety system alerts.

The Verdict

You should buy the C-HR if: You prioritise distinctive styling, low running costs from an efficient hybrid system, and a comfortable, enjoyable driving experience.

Consider alternatives if: You are on a tight budget, need the largest possible boot, or are easily annoyed by overactive safety system alerts.

Competitive Position: The Toyota C-HR is a highly desirable crossover that stands out with its bold styling and efficient hybrid powertrains. While it carries a higher price tag and offers less practicality than some key rivals, its unique design, low running costs, and Toyota's reputation for reliability make it a compelling choice for buyers who want a stylish and dependable all-rounder.

Great features and a lovely drive. It’s quiet and sleek and the interior is pretty. I wish the speakers were louder but that’s because I like to have the music blaring down the motorway LOL

Offers great overall value for money. Spec is plentiful although top model (Dynamic) actually isnt as well appointed as the Excel spec which is supposed to be one notch down. Compare the features and the Excel actually offers a better value for money balance. Look for one with the Premium pack and you will get full leather seats and an upgraded JBL sound system.

So many amazing features on this particular car make it such good value. Having taken several other makes for a test drive prior to this one, it seemed as though all the good points from all the other cars had been incorporated into this one car. I just couldnt let it go!!!

The car was in a terrible state. There was damage to the bumper and it was really dirty inside. It did not match the condition advertised in the advert
