Toyota RAV4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable and easy to drive | Pricier than many petrol and diesel alternatives |
| Hybrid power makes the RAV4 efficient and economical | Only available with five seats when some rivals have seven |
| Reliable, and comes with a long warranty | Wind and road noise at speed |
Quick Summary
The Toyota RAV4 (2019-present) is a practical and efficient hybrid SUV, highly regarded for its reliability and low running costs. This fifth-generation model is based on a completely new engineering platform and is exclusively available as a petrol-electric hybrid. It offers an impressive interior with high-quality materials, excellent seating position, and space for five adults. The boot provides 580 litres of storage up to the parcel shelf, or up to 1,690 litres with the rear seats folded. Performance is good, with the entry-level 215bhp front-wheel-drive model accelerating from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds, whilst the all-wheel-drive version is slightly quicker.
Running costs are impressively low, with the two-wheel-drive model achieving up to 50.4mpg on the WLTP test cycle and the all-wheel-drive version up to 48.7mpg. Many owners report averaging well over 45mpg in real-world driving. CO2 emissions are far lower than many rivals at 133g/km, and servicing costs are reasonable, with Toyota offering fixed-price servicing from £190 for an intermediate service. The RAV4 comes with a long warranty and Toyota's reputation for reliability should keep issues to a minimum. The range is uncomplicated with just four trim levels—Icon, Design, Excel and Dynamic—with even the basic Icon model extremely well equipped.
Best for: Buyers seeking a hybrid SUV with low running costs, excellent equipment levels, a comfortable cabin, and reliable family transport.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising lower purchase prices, larger families needing seven seats, or drivers sensitive to wind and road noise at speed.

The Verdict
You should buy the RAV4 if: You're seeking a hybrid SUV with low running costs, excellent equipment levels, a comfortable cabin, and reliable family transport.
Consider alternatives if: You're prioritising lower purchase prices, need seven seats, or are sensitive to wind and road noise at speed.
Competitive Position: The Toyota RAV4 (2019-present) is a strong contender in the hybrid SUV market, offering excellent reliability, low running costs, and impressive equipment levels. Whilst it commands a higher purchase price than conventional petrol and diesel alternatives such as the Skoda Karoq or Kia Sportage, its hybrid powertrain delivers exceptional fuel economy and lower emissions. The Hyundai Tucson offers strong user ratings and competitive value, whilst the Seat Ateca provides better value for money. However, if a hybrid powertrain is essential and five seats are sufficient, the RAV4 remains a commendable and dependable choice for practical family transport.

Across all model years, the Toyota RAV4 is well-loved for its reliability, spacious interior, and good fuel economy. Owners appreciate its smooth driving experience and practical features, making it a solid choice for families and everyday use. What people say
I have had excellent value from my RAV4, no issues just regular maintenance stuff! Very pleased!
Great instrument panel, nice shape but being under 5 ft the wing mirror was too close after my seat adjustment
This car is spacious for family outing. I like the colour and how it is maintained.
This car fulfilled all my requirements. I cycled with friends so I needed to put my bicycle in the back of the car in order to meet them at the various places we had decided to cycle around. It was comfortable to transport my wife and myself long distances, eg 100s of miles to visit friends and relations. Its music system was good. I would not have sold this car, it was sold behind my back, by my wife and son. The car was easy to drive and gave one confidence on the roads.
Great car to drive. Lots of safety features in a reasonably priced vehicle. Excellent for towing loads to 1900kg with this model/year (newer model has a lower towing capacity)
