Toyota RAV4 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Appealing design, interior and drive	Engine choice is PHEV-only
Efficient plug-in hybrid tech	Some plasticky materials inside
Reliability should be superb	Higher entry price than before

Quick Summary

The Toyota RAV4 (2026) is a sensible evolution of a popular family SUV, now exclusively available as a plug-in hybrid in the UK. With a generous EV range of up to 85 miles, it offers the potential for significantly lower running costs through cheap-rate home electricity. The latest generation features bolder design inspired by the Toyota Land Cruiser, bringing back character whilst maintaining the fuss-free driving experience the RAV4 is known for. It's practical inside with a 446-litre boot (expandable to 1,690 litres with rear seats folded) and benefits from an all-new ToyotaConnect infotainment system with a responsive 12.9-inch touchscreen.

Available in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations, the RAV4 delivers impressive performance with the AWD version achieving 0-62mph in just 5.8 seconds. The GR Sport variant offers a sportier chassis tune for those seeking more dynamic handling. Whilst not the most characterful machine in its class, the RAV4 combines Toyota's acclaimed reliability, competitive running costs, and a comprehensive warranty (extendable to 10 years with annual servicing) to make it a safe and sensible choice for family SUV buyers.

Best for: Practical-minded families seeking a reliable, efficient family SUV with low running costs, those wanting plug-in hybrid technology with genuine EV range, and buyers valuing Toyota's reputation for dependability.

Not ideal for: Those seeking the lowest entry price in the segment, drivers prioritising dynamic handling over comfort, or buyers wanting petrol or diesel-only engine options.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the RAV4 if: You're seeking a practical, reliable family SUV with efficient plug-in hybrid technology, genuine EV range, and low running costs, or you value Toyota's reputation for dependability and comprehensive warranty coverage.

Consider alternatives if: You need the lowest entry price in the segment, prioritise dynamic handling over comfort, or require petrol or diesel-only engine options without electrification.

Competitive Position: The Toyota RAV4 (2026) is a strong contender in the family SUV market, offering a compelling blend of practicality, efficiency, and reliability. Whilst the Kia Sportage edges ahead with a higher expert rating and user score, the RAV4 matches the Honda CR-V and Volkswagen Tiguan on overall CarGurus rating. The RAV4's PHEV-only approach and generous 85-mile EV range differentiate it from many rivals, making it particularly attractive for environmentally conscious buyers. Its bolder design, improved infotainment, and Toyota's acclaimed reliability make it a sensible choice, though some may find rivals offer more character or lower entry prices.
