Toyota Yaris Cross Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Hybrid sips fuel, especially around town	Quite cramped in the back
Toyota's warranty brings peace of mind	Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma
Usefully big boot for a small SUV	Ride comfort can be firm

Quick Summary

The Toyota Yaris Cross is a compact SUV that combines the city-friendly footprint of a small hatchback with sufficient interior space for a young family and a high driving position. Available exclusively as a petrol-electric hybrid, it offers two power outputs: the original 114bhp system and a later 129bhp version. With 350 litres of boot space (460 litres to the roof) and clever split-folding rear seats, it provides practical versatility for everyday use. The infotainment system has improved over time, featuring wireless smartphone integration and intuitive controls, though it remains less slick than some competitors.

Fuel economy ranges between 55–60mpg in everyday driving, with urban driving particularly beneficial to the hybrid system's regenerative braking. Toyota's timing chain eliminates costly belt replacements, and servicing costs are reasonable. The ride can be firm over deeper potholes, and the steering is precise but slightly remote. Whilst not as engaging as the Ford Puma, the Yaris Cross delivers a sensible, efficiency-focused driving experience. Toyota's warranty provides reassurance, making it a cost-effective choice for those prioritising reliability and low running costs over driving involvement.

Best for: Buyers seeking a compact SUV with excellent fuel economy, Toyota reliability, and peace of mind through warranty coverage; families needing a practical, lofty small car for urban and suburban driving.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving engagement, maximum rear-seat space, or a softer ride quality; drivers seeking the most versatile or affordable option in the small SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Yaris Cross if: You prioritise low running costs, hybrid efficiency, and Toyota reliability; you need a compact SUV with a high driving position and practical boot space; or you value warranty peace of mind.

Consider alternatives if: You seek maximum driving engagement, generous rear-seat space, a softer ride, or the best value for money in the small SUV segment.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris Cross is a sensible, cost-effective choice in the competitive small SUV market. Whilst it doesn't match the driving involvement of the Ford Puma or offer the versatility of some rivals, its hybrid efficiency, Toyota reliability, and comprehensive warranty make it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers prioritising low running costs. The Hyundai Bayon and Renault Captur offer comparable features with slightly higher expert ratings, whilst the Fiat Grande Panda delivers better value and user satisfaction. However, for those seeking a proven hybrid system and Toyota's reputation, the Yaris Cross remains a compelling option.
