The car is of a good value. Everything seems to work well except the automatic parking functionality.

Heads up option. I like the hybrid recharging and don't want a battery only car.Long journeys mean recharging. I like the driving position of an SUV and dont need the size of my RAV 4 still!

I like the AWD version though I think all of the hybrid cars in SUV form are expensive and I will wait before changing my diesel RAV AWD.

Toyota Yaris Cross (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The hybrid sips fuel, especially around town | Quite cramped in the back |
| Promises the first-rate reliability you'd expect of Toyota | The 4x4 version has less luggage room |
| Lots of boot space for a small car | Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Yaris Cross (2021-present) is a compact SUV that combines the town-friendly footprint of a small hatchback with the practicality and elevated seating position of a crossover. Based on the popular Yaris hatchback, it features chunky, fresh styling and a well-built interior with high-quality plastics. The car is powered exclusively by a traditional hybrid powertrain—a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and CVT transmission, producing 114bhp (or 128bhp in upgraded 2024 models). With 397 litres of boot space and a clever split adjustable boot floor on higher trims, it offers impressive practicality for its size, though rear legroom is somewhat limited.
The Yaris Cross delivers excellent fuel economy of 55-60mpg in everyday driving, with hybrid technology particularly beneficial in urban environments. Its ride quality is slightly firm but comfortable, and steering is precise and direct, though it lacks the driving engagement of rivals like the Ford Puma. Toyota's renowned reliability, reasonable servicing costs, and metal timing chain (lasting the car's lifetime) make it very cost-effective to own. Four trim levels—Icon, Design, Excel, and GR Sport—offer increasing levels of equipment, from adaptive cruise control and reversing camera on entry models to heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and larger infotainment screens on premium versions.
Best for: Buyers prioritising reliability and fuel efficiency, those seeking a practical compact SUV for families, and drivers who spend significant time in urban environments where hybrid technology excels.
Not ideal for: Those wanting maximum rear legroom, drivers seeking engaging handling dynamics, or buyers looking for the most versatile small SUV option.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Yaris Cross | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.1% | 4.6/5 |
| Renault Captur | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Hyundai Bayon | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.9% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Yaris Cross if: You prioritise reliability and fuel efficiency, seek a practical compact SUV for families, or spend significant time driving in urban environments where hybrid technology excels.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum rear legroom, want engaging handling dynamics, or require the most versatile small SUV option available.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris Cross is a solid contender in the compact SUV market, offering excellent reliability, impressive fuel economy, and practical boot space. Whilst it doesn't match the Ford Puma's driving engagement or versatility, and lacks the rear space of some rivals, its hybrid efficiency and Toyota's renowned dependability make it an outstanding choice for cost-conscious buyers. The Yaris Cross represents a sensible, well-rounded option that doesn't embarrass itself in any area, making it a genuinely good all-rounder for families and commuters seeking a dependable compact SUV.
