Toyota Yaris (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very economical, especially around town | The ride is on the firm side |
| Fantastic GR Yaris hot hatch | Not as practical as a Honda Jazz |
| Plenty of safety kit as standard | No satnav on pre-facelift models |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) is a stylish and sensible hybrid supermini that combines striking sports-car-esque styling with practical everyday usability. This latest generation swaps the staid appearance of previous models for a swooping side profile and distinctive wide rear, whilst being hybrid-only to maximise fuel economy. The Yaris feels nippy and nimble around town, with responsive hybrid power delivery and easy-to-use controls, though the firm ride means it doesn't settle completely on imperfect road surfaces. Boot space of 286 litres is adequate rather than generous, and the infotainment system can be fiddly, though the 2024 facelift brought improvements.
Running costs are exceptional, with real-world fuel economy of 60-65mpg achievable even in town driving thanks to Toyota's clever hybrid system. As an alternative fuel vehicle, the Yaris benefits from discounted tax rates, and servicing costs are reasonable with transparent pricing available online. The timing chain design should last the car's lifetime, reducing long-term maintenance expenses. The range-topping GR Yaris is a homologation special with a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine producing 257bhp, four-wheel drive, and rally-inspired handling, making it one of the most exciting hot hatches available. Well equipped across all trims and backed by Toyota's impressive warranty, the Yaris offers genuine talent beneath its eye-catching exterior.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking excellent fuel economy, those prioritising safety equipment and warranty coverage, and enthusiasts wanting an engaging hot hatch (GR Yaris).
Not ideal for: Drivers who prefer a softer ride, those needing maximum boot space, or buyers seeking the most engaging handling dynamics in a standard supermini.

The Verdict
You should buy the Yaris if: You're seeking exceptional fuel economy, prioritising safety equipment and warranty coverage, or looking for an exciting hot hatch option (GR Yaris).
Consider alternatives if: You prefer a softer ride, need maximum boot space, or want the finest handling dynamics in a standard supermini.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) is a strong contender in the modern supermini market, offering excellent value with outstanding fuel economy and comprehensive safety equipment. Whilst the firm ride may not suit all drivers and the Honda Jazz offers greater practicality, the Yaris's hybrid efficiency, stylish design, and impressive warranty make it a sound and sensible choice. The GR Yaris stands apart as one of the most exciting and engaging hot hatches available, combining rally-inspired engineering with everyday usability. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising running costs and reliability, the Yaris represents genuine talent beneath its eye-catching exterior.

What people say
Compact outside but remarkably spacious inside. I am 6 6 and can drive it comfortably. Reasonably well equipped and drives very nicely.
Just bought a second Yaris I can’t fault them at all. Especially as a second hand car, neither has ever let me down.
This model benefits from a larger interior boot and rear passenger room space then the newer models, whilst getting the benefits of Toyotas hybrid system.
Really nice car, but would have liked it with a black roof and safety plus pack.
I think Toyota Yaris is a super choice, and have just parted with my previous one after 15 years.
