Toyota Yaris (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very economical, especially around town	The ride is on the firm side
Fantastic GR Yaris hot hatch	Not as practical as a Honda Jazz
Plenty of safety kit as standard	No satnav on pre-facelift models

Quick Summary

The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) is a stylish and sensible supermini that combines striking sports-car-inspired styling with practical hybrid-only powertrain technology. This latest generation swaps the staid reputation of previous models for a swooping side profile and distinctive design, whilst maintaining the sensible approach Yaris buyers expect. The hybrid system delivers impressive real-world fuel economy of 60-65mpg, particularly in town driving where the clever energy harvesting system excels. With a 286-litre boot and well-screwed-together interior featuring a smart dashboard, the Yaris offers good practicality for its class, though it's not quite as versatile as the Honda Jazz.

On the road, the Yaris feels nippy and nimble with responsive throttle response from its 1.5-litre hybrid engine, making it ideal for urban driving. The 2024 facelift brought upgraded interior technology and optional increased power (129bhp versus 114bhp), improving the driving experience. Whilst the firm ride can feel unsettled on imperfect roads, the light steering and agile handling make it easy to drive. The standout GR Yaris hot hatch is a homologation special with a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine producing 257bhp, four-wheel drive, and exceptional handling—one of the most exciting hot hatches available. Toyota's reasonable servicing costs, metal timing chain, and impressive warranty add significant long-term value.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking excellent fuel economy, those wanting a stylish yet sensible supermini, families prioritising low running costs, and enthusiasts interested in an engaging hot hatch (GR Yaris).

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising a soft, comfortable ride, those needing maximum boot space, buyers wanting satnav as standard on older models, or those seeking the most engaging handling in the supermini class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Yaris if: You're seeking excellent fuel economy and low running costs, want a stylish yet sensible supermini, prioritise safety equipment, or are interested in the exceptional GR Yaris hot hatch.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum boot space, prefer a softer ride, need satnav as standard, or want the most engaging handling dynamics available in the supermini class.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) is a strong contender in the modern supermini market, offering excellent value through its hybrid efficiency and comprehensive safety kit. Whilst the Renault Clio matches it on user ratings and the Honda Jazz provides superior practicality, the Yaris combines style, economy, and driving enjoyment more effectively. The Ford Fiesta offers sharper handling, but the Yaris's real-world fuel economy and low running costs make it more economical to own. The standout GR Yaris variant is genuinely one of the most exciting hot hatches available, offering thrilling performance and handling that few rivals can match at any price point.
