Toyota Yaris (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very economical, especially around town | The ride is on the firm side |
| Fantastic GR Yaris hot hatch | Not as practical as a Honda Jazz |
| Plenty of safety kit as standard | No satnav on pre-facelift models |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) is a stylish and sensible supermini that has moved away from its traditionally staid image with a sporty design. This generation is hybrid-only (excluding the GR Yaris hot hatch), making it exceptionally economical. It offers good space in the front, though the rear seats are a little tight and the 286-litre boot isn't the largest in its class. Interior quality is generally good, and while the infotainment system in earlier models could be fiddly, it has been improved in the 2024 facelift.
On the road, the Yaris feels stable and responsive, with its 1.5-litre hybrid system (114bhp or 129bhp) providing perky performance and impressive real-world fuel economy of 60-65mpg. Running costs are further helped by discounted annual tax and a timing chain instead of a belt. The ride can be firm, and while agile, it lacks the steering feel of some rivals. The standout GR Yaris offers unhinged 257bhp performance and dazzling handling, born from rally homologation.
Best for: Drivers seeking excellent fuel economy and low running costs, those who appreciate stylish design, buyers prioritising reliability and a long warranty, and enthusiasts looking for an exciting, unique hot hatch (GR Yaris).
Not ideal for: Buyers who prioritise maximum rear passenger comfort or boot space, those desiring a softer ride, or drivers who want the most engaging handling from a standard supermini (e.g., Ford Fiesta).

The Verdict
You should buy the Yaris if: You're seeking an economical, stylish, and reliable supermini for city driving, or if you're an enthusiast looking for an exciting, unique hot hatch (GR Yaris).
Consider alternatives if: You need superior rear passenger space or boot capacity, prefer a softer, more compliant ride, or desire the most engaging driving dynamics from a standard supermini.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris (2021-present) is a strong contender in the supermini segment, particularly appealing with its hybrid-only powertrain delivering exceptional fuel economy and low running costs. Its contemporary styling and Toyota's renowned reliability and warranty are significant draws. While it may concede some practicality to rivals like the Honda Jazz and isn't the most dynamically engaging in its standard form compared to a Ford Fiesta, its overall package of economy, style, and peace of mind makes it a compelling choice. The GR Yaris stands as a unique and highly desirable performance model.

4.7 Overall rating
(59 reviews)Compact outside but remarkably spacious inside. I am 6 6 and can drive it comfortably. Reasonably well equipped and drives very nicely.
Just bought a second Yaris I can’t fault them at all. Especially as a second hand car, neither has ever let me down.
This model benefits from a larger interior boot and rear passenger room space then the newer models, whilst getting the benefits of Toyotas hybrid system.
Really nice car, but would have liked it with a black roof and safety plus pack.
I think Toyota Yaris is a super choice, and have just parted with my previous one after 15 years.
