Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Fantastically flexible Rather dull to drive
Innovative rear-hinged rear doors Entry-level cars are poorly equipped and underpowered
Economical diesel engines Not the most stylish car to look at

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a compact multi-purpose vehicle that prioritises practicality above all else. This second-generation model shares much with the Vauxhall Corsa but offers a taller body and exceptionally flexible interior. Every version features FlexDoors with rear-hinged rear doors that open particularly wide, making child seat installation and cabin access remarkably easy. The innovative FlexSpace seating system allows outer rear seats to move backwards, forwards, or diagonally inwards, creating two-, three-, four-, and five-seat configurations. With a 397-litre boot in standard configuration, it significantly outperforms comparable hatchbacks, and the interior is refined with supportive seats. The Meriva achieved a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

The Meriva is straightforward to drive with light, responsive controls and predictable handling, though it's not an exciting proposition. Engine options ranged from 74bhp to 138bhp, with five-speed and six-speed manual transmissions available, plus a six-speed automatic in some variants. Fuel economy is respectable, particularly with the 1.6-litre CDTi diesel achieving around 50-55mpg in real-world driving. Running costs are low, with most versions featuring timing chains and service intervals of one year or 20,000 miles. However, entry-level models lack air-conditioning and feature underpowered engines, so aim for Exclusiv specification or above for better equipment and performance.

Best for: Buyers prioritising practicality and flexibility, families needing accessible seating and generous boot space, and those seeking an affordable compact MPV with low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging driving experience, those wanting premium styling, or buyers unwilling to specify higher trim levels for adequate equipment.

The Verdict

You should buy the Meriva if: You prioritise practicality and flexibility, need accessible seating and generous boot space, or seek an affordable compact MPV with low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You want an engaging driving experience, prefer premium styling, or require higher equipment levels as standard across all trims.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is an excellent choice for practicality-focused buyers seeking a compact MPV. Its innovative FlexDoors and FlexSpace seating system remain unmatched in flexibility, and its low running costs make it exceptionally affordable to own. Whilst the Ford B-Max offers superior expert ratings and the Peugeot 3008 provides a more modern alternative, the Meriva's combination of affordability, practicality, and user satisfaction makes it a compelling option for families and those needing maximum interior versatility. Specification is key—aim for Exclusiv trim or above to avoid underpowered engines and missing equipment.

Customers say

Overall, the Vauxhall Meriva is well-regarded for its comfort and spacious interior, making it a solid choice for families. Owners appreciate the smooth ride and responsive turbo engine power. However, some drivers feel that it lacks speed and the steering isn't very engaging, which can take away from the fun of driving.

Spacious in the cab and boot space is more than adequate. Love the glass pano roof and electric blind, makes the car feel bigger and brighter. The half leather seats look really classy and lift the interior, electronic hand brake is a nice touch. Good all round vision and a comfortable drive, a good little brother to the Zafira.
