Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Fantastically flexible Rather dull to drive
Innovative rear-hinged rear doors Entry-level cars are poorly equipped and underpowered
Economical diesel engines Not the most stylish car to look at

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a compact multi-purpose vehicle that prioritises practicality above all else. Every model features innovative FlexDoors that open particularly wide with rear doors hinged at the rear, making child seat installation and cabin access exceptionally easy. The FlexSpace seating system allows outer rear seats to move backwards, forwards, or diagonally inwards, creating flexible two-, three-, four-, and five-seat configurations. With a 397-litre boot in standard configuration, it offers considerably more space than comparable hatchbacks, whilst remaining roomy enough for four adults with supportive, refined seating.

The Meriva is straightforward to drive with light, responsive controls and predictable, composed handling. Engine options ranged from 74bhp to 138bhp, with five- and six-speed manual transmissions available, plus automatic options on some variants. Fuel economy is respectable, particularly with the 1.6-litre CDTi diesel achieving around 50-55mpg in real-world driving. Running costs are low, with most versions featuring timing chains and service intervals of one year or 20,000 miles. As an affordable, practical alternative to standard family hatchbacks, it represents excellent value for budget-conscious buyers prioritising flexibility and space.

Best for: Families seeking maximum practicality and flexibility, those needing easy child seat access, and budget-conscious buyers wanting more space than a standard hatchback.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging driving dynamics, those seeking a stylish exterior, or buyers wanting well-equipped entry-level models.

The Verdict

You should buy the Meriva if: You're seeking maximum practicality and flexibility, need easy child seat access, or want more space than a standard hatchback on a budget.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, stylish exterior design, or well-equipped entry-level models.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Meriva (2010-2017) is a highly practical compact MPV that excels in flexibility and space, offering exceptional value for budget-conscious families. Whilst it lacks the driving engagement of some rivals and may not appeal to style-conscious buyers, its innovative FlexDoors and FlexSpace seating system remain unmatched in the segment. The Ford B-Max offers a more engaging drive, whilst the Nissan Note provides better value on the used market. However, for those prioritising practicality and affordability above all else, the Meriva remains an excellent choice. Aim for Exclusiv specification or above to ensure adequate equipment and avoid underpowered entry-level engines.

Customers say

Overall, the Vauxhall Meriva is well-regarded for its comfort and spacious interior, making it a solid choice for families. Owners appreciate the smooth ride and responsive turbo engine power. However, some drivers feel that it lacks speed and the steering isn't very engaging, which can take away from the fun of driving.

Spacious in the cab and boot space is more than adequate. Love the glass pano roof and electric blind, makes the car feel bigger and brighter. The half leather seats look really classy and lift the interior, electronic hand brake is a nice touch. Good all round vision and a comfortable drive, a good little brother to the Zafira.
