Vauxhall Mokka (2012-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Affordable to buy and run	Lacklustre driving experience
Practical for such a small car	4x4s are heavier and less efficient than front-wheel-drive models
All versions of the Mokka are well equipped	Mediocre cabin finish

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Mokka (2012-2019) is Vauxhall's entry into the compact SUV and crossover market, designed to compete with rivals such as the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, and Skoda Yeti. Launched at an attractive starting price of £15,995, it offers a spacious interior with 360 litres of boot space, more than many competitors in its class. The Mokka is available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, front- or four-wheel drive, and automatic transmission options, making it versatile for different buyer needs. All trim levels come well-equipped with standard features including air conditioning, cruise control, and daytime running lights.

The Mokka's primary weakness is its driving experience, with numb steering, a bumpy ride, and noisy early diesel engines. The cabin finish is also mediocre compared to rivals, and four-wheel-drive models are heavier and less efficient. However, as a used purchase, the Mokka represents excellent value thanks to significant depreciation. Running costs are reasonable, with diesel versions achieving over 50mpg in real-world driving and sensible servicing costs. The later Mokka X variant offers improved equipment levels, making it a more compelling proposition for budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical, affordable compact SUV.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, practical compact SUV with good equipment levels and low running costs.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising dynamic handling, refined driving experience, or premium cabin quality, or those requiring maximum boot space in the compact SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Mokka if: You're on a tight budget, seeking an affordable and practical compact SUV with good equipment levels and low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic handling, a refined driving experience, premium cabin quality, or maximum boot space in the compact SUV segment.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Mokka (2012-2019) faces stiff competition from more compelling rivals such as the Skoda Yeti, Renault Captur, and Nissan Juke, which often feature nicer interiors, better driving dynamics, and greater refinement. However, the Mokka's significant depreciation makes it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious buyers willing to compromise on driving experience for affordability and practicality. If cost is your primary concern, the Mokka represents genuine value; otherwise, spending a little more on a rival may prove worthwhile.
