Vauxhall Vivaro (2014-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Wide choice of sizes and layouts	Low-quality cabin plastics
Refined and economical turbodiesel engines	Diesels need to be worked hard when the van is fully loaded
Enjoyable to drive	Payload is nothing special

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Vivaro (2014-2019) is a practical and refined light commercial vehicle that shares its underpinnings with the Renault Trafic. Available in multiple configurations with long and short wheelbases and high and low roofs, it offers flexibility for various business needs. The cabin design is more MPV-like than utilitarian, featuring a six-way adjustable seat and adjustable steering column for comfort. A low floor and wide sliding doors make loading straightforward, whilst the supple ride quality works well whether empty or fully laden.

Powered by turbocharged 1.6-litre diesel engines ranging from 89bhp to 138bhp, the Vivaro delivers refined and economical performance with official combined figures of at least 40mpg. Euro 6-compliant versions received a 5bhp boost and use AdBlue technology. Real-world fuel consumption typically ranges from mid-30s to 40mpg depending on usage patterns. Service intervals are generous, and independent garages offer competitive rates. As a used van, it represents excellent value, particularly for one-man band operators and fleet drivers seeking a quality driving experience.

Best for: One-man band operators, fleet drivers, and businesses seeking a refined, economical, and enjoyable-to-drive light commercial vehicle with flexible load configurations.

Not ideal for: Operators requiring maximum payload capacity or those prioritising premium cabin materials and finishes.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Vivaro if: You're a one-man band operator or fleet driver seeking a refined, economical, and enjoyable-to-drive light commercial vehicle with flexible load configurations and excellent value.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum payload capacity or prioritise premium cabin materials and finishes over driving refinement.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Vivaro (2014-2019) is a strong contender in the used light commercial vehicle market, offering excellent refinement, economy, and driving enjoyment. Whilst it shares its platform with the Renault Trafic, the Vivaro's 'made in Britain' heritage and competitive pricing make it an attractive proposition. It outperforms the Volkswagen Transporter T6 in user satisfaction and matches the Ford Transit Custom and Renault Trafic for overall appeal. Its low-quality cabin plastics and modest payload are minor drawbacks offset by its superior driving experience and value proposition, making it an excellent choice for operators prioritising comfort and efficiency.
