Volkswagen ID. Buzz (2022-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Good to drive	Hugely expensive
Beautifully finished interior	Charging cables cost extra
Fantastic retro styling	There's still no official camper version

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a large electric vehicle that unmistakably evokes the iconic VW T1 Camper. At 4.7 metres long and just under 2.0 metres tall, it's compact enough for multi-storey car parks yet vastly roomier than comparable SUVs like the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Available with five, six, or seven seats depending on wheelbase, the ID. Buzz combines quirky styling with practical versatility. The standard-wheelbase model features an 84kWh battery with up to 283 miles of range, whilst the long-wheelbase variant offers a 91kWh battery for up to 293 miles. A dual-motor GTX variant provides additional performance for those seeking a more spirited drive.

The ID. Buzz excels in practicality and comfort. The boot offers a remarkable 1,121 litres with five seats in place, expanding to 2,205 litres with seats folded. The long-wheelbase version provides even more space. The interior features a beautifully designed dashboard with excellent materials, sliding doors for tight parking spaces, and a flat floor ensuring comfort for all occupants. Driving dynamics are serene and composed, with light steering, impressive quietness, and excellent damping. Running costs are reasonable for an EV, particularly for company car drivers benefiting from lower Benefit-In-Kind tax. However, the premium pricing and additional option costs require careful consideration.

Best for: Families seeking maximum space and versatility, lifestyle-focused buyers valuing distinctive design, and those wanting an electric alternative to traditional MPVs or vans.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising maximum range or performance, or customers seeking a conventional SUV driving experience.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ID. Buzz if: You're seeking maximum space and versatility, value distinctive retro styling, or want an electric alternative to traditional MPVs and vans.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise maximum range or performance, or prefer a conventional SUV driving experience.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a unique proposition in the electric vehicle market, offering unmatched space and versatility combined with distinctive styling and excellent build quality. Whilst the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E offer superior range and value respectively, and the BMW iX3 provides premium credentials, the ID. Buzz stands apart through its practical design and lifestyle appeal. Its premium pricing reflects its distinctive positioning as a lifestyle vehicle rather than a conventional family SUV. For buyers prioritising space, comfort, and individuality over outright performance or affordability, the ID. Buzz represents a compelling choice.
