Volkswagen Passat (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Posh-feeling interior	Infotainment system is difficult to navigate
Generous standard equipment	A few strange ergonomic issues
Lots of space for people and luggage	Doesn't come cheap

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Passat (2024-present) is a ninth-generation family estate car that represents a significant departure from its predecessors. Available exclusively in estate form, it measures almost five metres long and delivers exceptional practicality with a 690-litre boot and generous passenger space. The interior quality is a cut above mainstream rivals, featuring a posh-feeling cabin with smart, conservative styling and grown-up driving dynamics that prioritise comfort and predictability over outright agility.

Initially powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged eTSI petrol engine with mild hybrid technology producing 148bhp, the Passat delivers real-world fuel economy of around 42-45mpg. Plug-in hybrid eHybrids offering 204PS or 272PS will join the range, alongside a future 2.0-litre petrol option with four-wheel drive. Three trim levels—Life, Elegance, and R-Line—come well equipped with standard features including LED lighting, climate control, heated seats, and adaptive cruise control. However, the complex infotainment system with its confusing menu structure and abundance of touchscreen functions can frustrate users, and the car's premium pricing reflects its upmarket positioning.

Best for: Families seeking maximum practicality and space in a sophisticated, well-built package, and those prioritising comfort and standard equipment over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, drivers who value intuitive infotainment systems, or those seeking engaging driving dynamics and agility.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Passat if: You're seeking maximum practicality and space in a sophisticated, well-built package, and prioritise comfort and standard equipment over driving excitement.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, value intuitive infotainment systems, or require engaging driving dynamics and agility.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Passat (2024-present) is a strong contender in the family estate market, offering exceptional space, posh interior quality, and generous standard equipment. Whilst the BMW 5 Series edges ahead on user satisfaction and value deals, the Passat delivers superior practicality and a more accessible price point. The Skoda Superb offers similar value, though the Passat's more upmarket feel and refined interior justify its positioning. The Peugeot 508 provides an alternative, but the Passat's superior build quality and equipment levels make it the more compelling choice for families prioritising space and sophistication over driving engagement.
