Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (2009-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Feels like a bigger, more expensive car than it is | Unexciting to drive – sporty GTI is a particular disappointment |
| Fuel-efficient BlueMotion diesels | Not that well equipped |
| Refined and comfortable to drive | Understated styling could be seen as boring |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (2009-2017) is a mature and refined supermini that punches above its weight in terms of build quality and interior ambience. Designed by Walter de Silva, it successfully delivers the VW hatchback trick of feeling like a bigger and more expensive car than it actually is. With a 280-litre boot expanding to 952 litres with the rear seats folded, it offers surprising practicality for its size. The Polo prioritises comfort and refinement over driving excitement, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a grown-up, relaxing driving experience rather than thrilling handling dynamics.
Available in three and five-door body styles, the Polo received a mid-life refresh in 2014 that introduced new technology and engines whilst maintaining its understated styling. Engine options range from modest naturally aspirated petrols to efficient BlueMotion diesels achieving up to 90mpg, and performance-focused GTI variants. Running costs are very reasonable, with most models sitting in insurance group 15 or below. The post-facelift cars introduced advanced features such as autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, though these were expensive options. As a used car, the Polo represents excellent value for those prioritising comfort, refinement, and quality over sporting credentials.
Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, comfortable, and well-built supermini; those prioritising fuel efficiency with BlueMotion diesels; and drivers wanting a car that feels more upmarket than its price tag suggests.
Not ideal for: Enthusiasts seeking engaging handling like a Ford Fiesta; those wanting striking, bold styling; or buyers on the tightest budgets seeking maximum value.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Polo | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 32.6% | 4.3/5 |

| Ford Fiesta | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.7% | 4.4/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Polo if: You seek a refined, comfortable, and well-built supermini; you prioritise fuel efficiency with BlueMotion diesels; or you want a car that feels more upmarket than its price suggests.
Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling like a Ford Fiesta, want striking styling, or are seeking maximum value on the tightest budget.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (2009-2017) is a strong contender in the used supermini market, offering premium build quality, refinement, and comfort that rivals more expensive cars. Whilst it lacks the driving excitement of the Ford Fiesta and the budget-friendly appeal of the Vauxhall Corsa, its sophisticated approach, efficient engines, and upmarket feel make it an excellent choice for those prioritising quality and composure. The BlueMotion diesels are particularly impressive for fuel economy, whilst the GTI variants offer accessible performance. For buyers willing to spend slightly more for a car that feels significantly more expensive, the Polo represents outstanding value.

4.3 Overall rating
(27 reviews)This VW is just as advertised. It is in very good condition, almost like new. The car has a full VW service history. The interior shows minimal, if any, signs of wear and tear. The car is responsive with excellent handling. Given the price range for used VW Polos this is positive value. Most importantly - the Seller has been excellent throughout, being very responsive and caring towards the Customer.
Had the car 2 days so far so good looks and drives lovely good spec interior
Good features and lovely to drive. Prices remain high not much difference between new and used prices.
Brilliant car wonderful drive looks good and a better buy than the Audi A1
The Polo is an excellent car, great value and a great drive. Being a VW, it is well-made, nippy and looks fabulous.
