Volkswagen Scirocco (2008-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Loads of cabin space for a sporty coupe | Not quite as sexy as an Audi TT |
| Driving experience balances sporty and sensible | Not as fun to drive as a BMW 2 Series |
| High-performance R is great fun | Potential reliability issues |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Scirocco mk3 (2008-2017) is a stylish, curvaceous three-door coupe that bears little resemblance to the Golf on which it's based. With wider suspension tracks and distinctive styling, it offers a different driving experience. The interior is classy and robustly constructed, with plenty of front headroom and comfortable sports seats. Rear headroom is tight for taller passengers, but knee-room is generous. The 312-litre boot is usable and extends to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded, making it more practical than most coupes for family duties.
The Scirocco mk3 launched with a 197bhp 2.0-litre TSI engine, later joined by a 1.4-litre twincharger petrol, 2.0 TDI diesel, and the impressive 261bhp Scirocco R. All engines are turbocharged, delivering strong mid-range performance. The driving experience balances sportiness with comfort, offering high levels of roadholding and accurate steering. However, reliability issues are a concern, with owners reporting costly repairs including turbocharger failures and adaptive damper problems. Fuel consumption ranges from 42-52mpg for petrol models and 44-67mpg for diesels. Insurance groups vary from 18 to 39 depending on specification.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, practical coupe with sporty credentials, those wanting a high-performance option (R model), and drivers who value comfort alongside performance.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising premium badge appeal (like an Audi TT), buyers seeking the most engaging handling dynamics, or those unwilling to invest in a thorough pre-purchase inspection due to potential reliability concerns.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Scirocco | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.8% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi TT | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.0% | 4.2/5 |
| Peugeot RCZ | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Nissan 370Z | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 30.5% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Scirocco if: You seek a stylish, practical coupe with sporty credentials, want a high-performance option (R model), or value comfort alongside performance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium badge appeal (like an Audi TT), seek the most engaging handling dynamics, or are unwilling to invest in a thorough pre-purchase inspection due to potential reliability concerns.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Scirocco mk3 is a likeable and practical coupe that balances sportiness with everyday usability better than most rivals. It looks racy, feels fast throughout the range, and is genuinely spacious for a coupe. However, reliability issues are a significant concern that cannot be ignored. Compared to the premium Audi TT and stylish Peugeot RCZ, the Scirocco offers better practicality and value. Our best advice is to spend time researching reputable independent specialists and arrange a thorough pre-purchase inspection to avoid costly surprises.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Beautiful car in all ways. An absolute pleasure to drive. Good value for money at the price I paid . Only quibble is the lack of cruise control.
The car is a perfect all rounder car. You need a good looking car? You need a 4 seater car? You need boot space? Going long distance or short? Finding large car for parking an issue? Cheap road tax? Road bumps causing an issue? Look no further. This car deals with all of these with great positivity and expectations. Only con I can find in this car is the fact that you can feel those tiny bumps on uneven road very easily, it doesn’t ride smoothly as you would think cars are designed for. I’m sure tuning the suspicion may fix this. Otherwise the seats are very comfortable. Only reason why it doesn’t receive a full 5 star rating from me. Thank you
Exciting car just to look at yet alone drive. Great driving experience especially with the DSG box Needs more power but that is easily remedied because of the turbo Avery good buy
