Volkswagen Taigo (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Top-spec engine impresses	Some interior quality issues
Generous standard equipment	Pricey compared with more practical T-Cross
Spacious, with a particularly large boot	Not that enjoyable to drive

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen Taigo is a small and stylish crossover launched in 2021, offering a compelling blend of practicality and contemporary design. Based on proven Volkswagen Polo components, it features turbocharged petrol engines ranging from 94bhp to 148bhp, with manual and automatic transmission options. The Taigo excels in interior space, providing generous legroom for rear passengers and an impressive 440-litre boot that expands to 1,222 litres with seats folded. Standard equipment is generous across all trim levels, including air conditioning, LED lighting, and wireless smartphone integration, with higher trims offering digital cockpits and advanced driver assistance features.

However, the Taigo's appeal is tempered by interior quality concerns, with cheaper plastics and materials feeling below expectations for its price point. Whilst the 1.5-litre engine delivers impressive performance and smooth power delivery, the smaller 1.0-litre options may feel underpowered for some drivers. The light steering and comfortable ride prioritise everyday practicality over driving engagement, making it less thrilling than rivals like the Ford Puma. Running costs are reasonable, with the smaller engines achieving close to 50mpg, though the 1.5-litre returns around 40mpg in real-world conditions. The Taigo holds its value well, benefiting from the small SUV segment's popularity and limited UK availability.

Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, comfortable crossover with striking styling and the Volkswagen badge, those prioritising practicality and standard equipment, and drivers wanting a reliable, easy-going daily companion.

Not ideal for: Enthusiasts seeking engaging driving dynamics, budget-conscious buyers comparing it to the cheaper Polo, or those requiring all-wheel drive capability.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Taigo if: You want a spacious, comfortable crossover with striking styling and the Volkswagen badge, prioritise practicality and standard equipment, or seek a reliable, easy-going daily companion.

Consider alternatives if: You're seeking engaging driving dynamics, looking for better value compared to the cheaper Polo, or require all-wheel drive capability.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Taigo occupies a middle ground in the small crossover segment, offering generous space and equipment at a competitive price. Whilst it outperforms the Nissan Juke Mk2 in overall ratings, it trails the Seat Arona and Ford Puma, which offer superior driving engagement and user satisfaction. The Taigo's strength lies in its practicality and standard kit, but its interior quality concerns and less dynamic driving experience make it a less compelling choice than the Ford Puma, which delivers more excitement at a similar price point. For buyers prioritising comfort and space over driving thrills, the Taigo remains a sensible option within the segment.
