Volkswagen Tiguan (2024-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant for practicality and versatility | Infotainment system is way too complex |
| Nicely trimmed interior | Firm ride on larger alloy wheels |
| Good looks and desirable image | Many versions look rather expensive |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Tiguan (2024-present) is a premium mid-size family SUV that combines generous interior space with a well-appointed cabin and desirable styling. The third-generation model offers impressive practicality with a 652-litre boot, spacious rear seating for three adults, and cleverly designed split-folding rear seats. A comprehensive range of powertrains includes two eTSI mild-hybrid petrol engines, a 2.0-litre TDI diesel, and plug-in hybrid eHybrid models with around 60-70 miles of electric-only range. The cabin feels premium with a minimalist design, though the infotainment system, whilst visually impressive, can be unnecessarily complicated to navigate.
Driving dynamics are adequate rather than exciting, with the entry-level petrol engines requiring noticeable effort to maintain pace. The eHybrid models offer superior performance and impressive efficiency for company car drivers. The standard suspension has a firm edge, particularly on larger alloy wheels, though optional adaptive suspension provides a smoother ride. Running costs vary significantly by powertrain, with official figures ranging from 45.6mpg for petrol engines to 52.3mpg for diesel, whilst plug-in hybrids offer substantial savings for those charging regularly. Insurance groupings range from group 18 to group 31, and some versions incur a luxury car surcharge of £425 annually.
Best for: Family buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped SUV with premium styling, those wanting plug-in hybrid efficiency for company car tax benefits, and drivers prioritising practicality and interior quality.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking engaging driving dynamics, or drivers who prefer straightforward infotainment systems without excessive menu navigation.

The Verdict
You should buy the Tiguan if: You're seeking a spacious, well-equipped family SUV with premium styling, wanting plug-in hybrid efficiency for company car tax benefits, or prioritising practicality and interior quality.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, seeking engaging driving dynamics, or prefer straightforward infotainment systems without excessive menu navigation.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Tiguan (2024-present) is a strong contender in the mid-size family SUV market, offering excellent practicality, a premium cabin, and desirable styling. Whilst rivals like the Skoda Karoq and Kia Sportage score marginally higher with users and experts, the Tiguan's superior interior quality and comprehensive powertrain options, particularly the plug-in hybrids, make it an excellent choice for families prioritising space and refinement. The Volvo XC40 offers comparable ratings but targets a slightly different market segment. The Tiguan's main weakness is its complex infotainment system and firm ride on larger wheels, but for those valuing practicality and premium feel, it remains a highly sensible choice.

What people say
A lot of bells and whistles for the money. The automatic is smooth and quick, in fact without the display you wouldnt know it had changed gear. Great car,I would highly recommend it.
The cd player is in a very awkward location but we will have to get used to it. The hatchback could have done with a self closing switch as it is quite heavy.
Features are compatible to bmw x3, but £10,000 cheaper, brilliant
The size allows plenty of room for four adults, but is not too large to make supermarket parking practically impossible. The addition of rear seat adjustments in both seat position and backrest also helps to comfortably accommodate even the taller adults. The semi-auto DSG gearbox makes gear change almost imperceptible. Plus the ride is comfortable and composed over most surfaces.....except pothole-riddled roads. However, one must accept that only a military tank could travel along UK roads without subjecting its occupants to the bone-shaking jolts that we UK drivers routinely endure. The information display has a very wide range of menus and settings that provide ample data in a clearly defined manner. I cant compare this compact SUV to other makes because Ive not driven any offerings from rival manufacturers. The fact that Ive bought one should indicate I think the car is value for money.
Good service record and comfortable to drive. Looks sleek and modern
