Volvo XC40 (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Stylish, chunky looks | Rear seats not the most comfortable |
| Excellent safety kit | Electric version is expensive |
| Comfortable as well as good to drive | Infotainment system on earlier models a bit fiddly |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC40 (2018-present) is a highly desirable and award-winning compact SUV, renowned for its sharp exterior design and stylish, airy interior. While initially offering various powertrains, the XC40 name is now retained for mild-hybrid petrol models (electric versions rebranded as EX40). Volvo prioritises comfort, offering a generally smooth and well-isolated ride, though some suspension noise can occur, and steering is light for easy manoeuvrability. It's best suited as a four/occasional five-seater, with comfortable front seats and a usable, albeit not largest, boot.
The interior showcases tasteful design and high-end sophistication. Early infotainment systems were improved with later Google software integration. Running costs are competitive, benefiting from strong residual values and mid-forties mpg from mild-hybrid petrol engines. Service intervals are typically annual or every 18,000 miles. The XC40's blend of practicality, style, and safety makes it a popular choice, though dynamic handling isn't its primary focus.
Best for: Drivers prioritising stylish design, comfort, safety, and strong residual values in a compact SUV. Ideal for families needing a practical four-seater (occasional five) and those seeking mild-hybrid efficiency.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most dynamic handling, those who need a truly spacious five-seater, or those sensitive to early infotainment system quirks.

The Verdict
You should buy the Corsa if: You prioritise stylish design, comfort, safety, and strong residual values in a compact SUV. Ideal for families needing a practical four-seater (occasional five) and those seeking mild-hybrid efficiency.
Consider alternatives if: You seek the most dynamic handling, need a truly spacious five-seater, or are sensitive to early infotainment system quirks.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC40 (2018-present) stands out in the compact SUV segment with its distinctive Scandinavian design, emphasis on comfort, and robust safety features. It offers strong residual values and competitive running costs, making it an attractive option against rivals like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Range Rover Evoque. While it may not offer the most engaging drive for enthusiasts, its blend of practicality, style, and ease of ownership makes it a highly desirable and sensible choice for a broad range of buyers.

(13 reviews)A comfortable, roomy, solid car and a pleasure to drive. Seems good value for money and compares favourably with similar size vehicles
Great car. I added carplay and mudflaps. I had been concerned about whether the T3 engine would have enough power, but find that it is perfectly suited to the car and I’ll want for nothing. Very happy!
The R-Design Pro D4 AWD is a fantastic car, good looking, easy to drive, powerful and feels very planted. The auto box is smooth and D4 diesel engine quite and refined. Steering quite sensitive but then Ive been used to an aged Land Rover. The high-quality, minimalist interior definitely has the feel of a luxury car and is up there with BMW and Audi. The touch-screen infotainment console takes a little bit of getting used to but once you understand the basic principles its fairly easy to navigate. The high-end models are expensive but loaded with kit so you get what you pay for really. New to me so havent had the chance to drive off-road on the slippery stuff or tow with it, but Im assured its more than capable of doing both remarkably well. For an AWD, I would have preferred smaller alloys and larger profile all-weather tyres but most drivers of these cars would probably be using it in an urban environment.
Only because we are used to a powered drivers seat and keyless locking on our Toyota Rav4. Performance and handling are far greater on this car.
Its a great car from a reliable manufacturer. Worth the money.
