Customers say
The Volvo XC60 has garnered a strong reputation across its model years for its quality build, comfort, and performance. Many owners appreciate its generous interior space and safety features, often comparing it favorably against competitors like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Drivers particularly enjoy the economical fuel efficiency and well-equipped interiors, although some do express concerns about the high maintenance costs and the vehicle’s price relative to others in its class. Overall, the XC60 is seen as a stylish and practical choice for those seeking a luxury SUV experience.

It's a good workhorse and a good luxury car that is brilliant for a family. The AWD was important to get around in bad weather

The XC60 is a wonderful car for touring and the longer distances. The seats are very comfortable and you get a god all round view of other road users. The 2.4 engine is flexible and will give around 40-45 MPG; the 2.0 litre is much more economical and has a lower road tax.

Volvo XC60 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Looks classy both inside and out | No seven-seat option |
| Efficient petrol and plug-in hybrid engines | Not exciting to drive |
| A very practical family vehicle | Pricier than many similarly sized SUVs |
Quick Summary
The Volvo XC60 is a premium mid-size SUV that has established itself as one of the world's best-selling models in its class. The 2025 update brings a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen with faster software, improved sound insulation, and refined styling, whilst maintaining the understated Scandinavian luxury that defines the brand. Inside, high-quality materials, soft-touch surfaces, and real metal trim create an air of refined elegance that rivals the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. The cabin is clean and minimalist, prioritising substance over flash.
The XC60 excels as a long-distance companion, offering exceptional ride comfort and impressive noise insulation that make motorway journeys particularly enjoyable. Its suspension is tuned for comfort rather than sportiness, and whilst it's not the most agile SUV on country roads, it feels composed and assured. The engine line-up now focuses on a 2.0-litre petrol with electrification options: the B5 mild-hybrid (247bhp), T6 plug-in hybrid (346bhp), and range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid (451bhp). Boot space is generous at 483 litres, expanding to 1,410 litres with rear seats folded. Running costs are reasonable for the class, with the B5 achieving around 35mpg in real-world driving.
Best for: Buyers seeking a luxurious, comfortable family SUV with Scandinavian design appeal, those prioritising long-distance comfort and refinement, and families wanting efficient hybrid technology.
Not ideal for: Those seeking a sporty driving experience, buyers needing seven seats, or those on a tight budget, as the XC60 commands premium pricing.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo XC60 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 37.7% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLC | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 39.6% | 4.5/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 37.9% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 40.5% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the XC60 if: You seek a luxurious, comfortable family SUV with distinctive Scandinavian design, prioritise long-distance refinement, or want efficient hybrid technology in a premium package.
Consider alternatives if: You desire a sporty driving experience, require seven seats, or prefer better value for money than premium pricing allows.
Competitive Position: The Volvo XC60 holds its own against premium rivals, offering a distinctive alternative to the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Audi Q5 offers marginally better value, the XC60 distinguishes itself through superior interior design and long-distance comfort. Its Scandinavian aesthetic and refined approach to luxury appeal to buyers seeking something different from traditional German premium brands. The XC60 remains an excellent choice for those prioritising comfort, practicality, and understated elegance over sportiness.
